featured categories help

  I’m pretty sure this is what its called (featured categories) where on the homepage the newest posts are bundled together organized by category. Only some themes have this function, the theme i am currently using is nuntius.
  I have lets say Category A, B, C in which I put under a main category called “main category” Under Category A I have category 1,2,3.
  If have posts under category 1,2,3 they always show up as separate categories on the homepage (they are 3 different groups). Is there anyway of putting these subcategory(1,2,3) under a main Category A using the featured category function on the homepage?
