Featured image cropping inconsistent
-
Having issues with my featured images using the Canard theme on a free plan. Some are cropped and some show the full image – but only on a desktop or tablet (on a phone they all are cropped consistently).

Hi hammondj68,
It looks like you have three options:
- Switch to a theme that crops the featured images the way that you like.
- Crop the featured image yourself and re-upload for each post. Essentially cropping them all to the same aspect ratio.
- Edit the CSS of your site to crop the images how you would like.
A Premium Plan or Business Plan is required to gain access to advanced design customization (which includes CSS).

I am old school. :)
Option 4
I would note that the featured images in that theme are are 1920 wide by 768 high. https://wordpress.com/theme/canard
I would not waste any image storage space at all and would not even use the WordPress.com cropper. Instead I would use a free image editor online https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/#image-editing-software and create images of the exact required size, as well as optimizing them for the web, prior to uploading them.

tryptc and timethief,
Thanks for the advice. I ended up using an alternate image editor to crop the images beforehand and they now look like I want them too.
Follow up question: using Canard’s built in “highlight up to 5 featured posts in a grid” function, is there a non-CSS way to specify where the grid starts cropping the featured images (it appears to be upper left)? Don’t think I can pre-crop them as described above since the grid dimensions change based on browser width.
Thanks again. -
Hi @hammondj68, sorry, featured images are going to change shapes depending on your theme and screen size, and in some cases (like in Canard) they’ll change based on where they fit in a lineup, too.
Some themes will pretty consistently crop to a certain shape, so you could consider using that. Just bear in mind Twitter and Facebook and other social sharing systems tend to crop preview images, too.
If you’re pre-cropping on your computer, maybe consider all of the different shapes your theme might use, and crop so the image will work regardless. This usually involves making sure there’s plenty of space around the subject.
If that doesn’t work as well because the feel needs a tightly cropped picture, maybe consider using a different featured image (like a detail that can be cropped however a theme wants it) then put the properly cropped image in the post itself as a non-featured image. Your theme will always display those in their original shape.
