featured image does not appear in screen options

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t find the area for selecting a featured image in the sidebar. I also can’t find it in the Screen Options section. (That is the solution I found in the database.)

I have used WordPress both on WordPress.com as well as WordPress blogs that I have hosted on my own webspace and have never run into this. I am resurecting a blog I haven’t used much if that makes a difference. I realize that the blogs hosted on WordPress.com are automatically updated.

How can I get the Featured image section to show?

    Thanks!

    Hi there.

This seems to be specific to the theme you currently have activated, ChaoticSoul. ChaoticSoul is one of our older themes and it’s now retired, so you may find it missing some features such as support for featured images. Have you considered changing your theme? Our repository’s full of great new themes, and we add more regularly:

If you let me know a bit about what your site’s going to be about and your idea of the perfect theme, I’d be happy to offer some suggestions also. :)

    Hi,
    Thank you.
I’ll have to see if I can find a theme that suits. I think perhaps one of the basic WordPress things might suit.

    Hi DWPenner.

If you’re looking for a newer theme that’s similar to ChaoticSoul, with its clean, simple design, and two column layout, then I’d suggest looking at Wilson and Twenty Fifteen. Kelly is also a simple, elegant theme that may suit what you’re after.

Just a few suggestions as a starting point! Theme choice is a very much based on personal preference, so I’d encourage you to have a dig around our theme repository too.

    Hi Siobhyb,

I was looking at Twenty Eleven and Twenty Twelve, but was surprised not to find the light text on dark background variation that I have used on other blogs that I am hosting. I guess that is one difference between hosting for free on WordPress.com and hosting it on my own webspace by downloading from WordPress.org. I would have thought the themes would be the same. Especially the Twenty… series of themes from WordPress.

I am looking at one called Sunspot right now, but might check out Wilson and Kelly

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi DWPenner.

You can use the dark colour scheme for Twenty Eleven here at WordPress.com, also. To switch to that scheme, you’ll need to head to your site’s WP Admin, and then Appearance > Theme Options. Check the ‘Dark’ option next to ‘Color Scheme’ on that page and ‘Save Changes.’

The option for a darker scheme isn’t builtin to Twenty Twelve here at WordPress.com, however, you can change its background via Appearance > Background. With WordPress.com Premium, you’d also have some extra options for customising the theme.

I’m glad you found Sunspot! Let me know if there’s any questions you have around its setup or on any of our themes.

    Hello!
    Thank you once more!
I had only been looking at the preview and on the preview they didn’t have an option for the dark version of Twenty Eleven.
I’ve actually been using that for my other sites I have. I actually prefer the dark ones because I am prone to migraines and the dark background makes a big difference to me. The Sunspot theme is interesting, but I like having the larger image on the header. I like to be able to post feature images that will go nicely in the header (1000×288). I use that to my advantage.

Though I have found when I try do that with my personally hosted sites with Twenty Eleven, the feature image doesn’t replace the default one for that post.

I’m not sure if I missed a setting to allow for the feature image to replace the header image?

    Hi there.

The Featured Image should replace the Header Image for your posts on your self-hosted site by default. Can you double check whether the images you’re testing are at least 1000px in width by 288px in height?

If your images are the correct size, then the best place to go for support for your self-hosted site are the WordPress.org sub forums for Twenty Eleven:

    https://wordpress.org/support/theme/twentyeleven

Volunteers helping out there will be in a better position to troubleshoot with you.

I’ve been making my feature images 1000×288 just to be sure. It works with my other blogs, just not the self hosted ones.

I’ll head over to the twentyeleven forum tomorrow and have a look!

    Thanks!
