Featured image help with Chateau theme
-
Hello,
I’m really struggling using the Featured image setting, especially when I want to share my post to Facebook. The option doesn’t allow me to determine how the featured image should look and it always focuses on the middle of the image. Also, often when I select the featured image, it doesn’t work when I share the post. And sometimes the featured image becomes a featured header image and sometimes it doesn’t.
In terms of the optimal image size the Chateau theme, I can’t find the information anywhere. When I posted a blog post on Facebook about a year ago it worked fine, but it no longer does. Please help me. I’m desperate!
Thank you.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I’m really struggling using the Featured image setting, especially when I want to share my post to Facebook. The option doesn’t allow me to determine how the featured image should look and it always focuses on the middle of the image.
Depending on where your images are showed on Facebook, they can be used in a lot of unpredictable ways. In general, square images have the most flexibility, so I recommend cropping your image to be a square (and focused on the area you want) before setting it as your featured image.
Also, often when I select the featured image, it doesn’t work when I share the post. And sometimes the featured image becomes a featured header image and sometimes it doesn’t.
Can you share with me the URL of a post that has had both of these issues so I can take a closer look?

No problem. They are at the bottom of the theme info page here: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/chateau/
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi there,
Thanks for the information. It’s very helpful. I guess I’m struggling with using the Featured Image option. Is the purpose of it specifically to the change the header of that particular post? Because I want my header to remain the same. Sometimes when I select the Featured Image option, it changes the header and sometimes is doesn’t. Can I disable the option to change the header for a particular post and still select a Featured Image so a particular image can represent my post?
This is the post that was causing me a lot of difficulty: http://thatisfancy.com/2014/01/05/fancy-sweatshirts-for-2014/
When I selected the Feature Image option to featured the first (main) image in the post, it changed the header. I thought it was because it was a .png file so I changed it to .jpg but it still changed the header. And when I went to share the post it on Facebook, it wouldn’t show the image I selected.
I guess I’m just confused about Featured Images. I’ve read everything there is to read on WordPress/support about Featured Images but I don’t think I’m using the tool correctly.
Appreaciate any advice you have. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Casey,

From what I can tell, there is a problem with your theme. If it were functioning correctly, you would see a featured image applied to the header on ALL posts that have one set. It should not be applied inconsistently, though, so I am going to have my engineering team take a closer look here.
However, it sounds like that is NOT what you want to happen, so I would suggest you avoid using featured images if you want to continue using this theme. In that case, Facebook should select what image to apply to a post you share, using the following order of preference.
- Featured image
- The first image of a Slideshow within the post
- The first image of a Gallery within the post
- An image attached to the post and inserted
- Any other image in the post (not attached but perhaps linked)
Please note that Facebook sometimes changes things on their end and display a different image than expected. This is outside our control, though we adjust to these changes as best we can to avoid inconsistencies. In general, however, it should work as described.

Hey Jerry,
All very good info. I really appreacite your help because I was getting super frustrated and couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong.
I think I’ll be looking at upgrading to a newer theme soon so this is all helpful.
Cheers,

In that case, there is a recent post on The Daily Post on just that topic. You might find it to be worth a look:

It sure does. Appreciate you sharing the article. I do have one last question, if you don’t mind. I can’t figure out how to use the “Continue reading” option that is available with the Chateau theme. They show it here: http://chateaudemo.wordpress.com/
Some of my posts are really long and I’d really like to be able to only have the first image and the first paragraph of a particular post on the home page and then have “Continue reading” link to the post’s landing page, which will include the rest of the content but am unsure on how to do so? Can you direct me?
Here’s my home page and you can see how long the latest post is:
