'Featured image' isn't the picture showing in WordPress Reader

  Hello, hello.
  I always select a ‘featured image’ to show at the top of a post, and in the past this image was always also the one attached to the post title when you came across my blog post in WordPress Reader. So far, so good. Except that as of my last two posts, the ‘featured image’ is no longer the one showing when you come across my blog in Reader – it seems to be showing the first photo from each post instead, which is definitely not what I want.

  Any ideas why this is suddenly happening and how to resolve it please?

  Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.

  If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead.

  The way our RSS feeds work is that it pulls and displays the first image it finds inside the post content. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria mentioned above, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

  @thetwistedyarn,

  I’m thinking this is actually a result of the featured image dimensions you’re currently setting for your posts. Rather than try to scale the image down or crop it to a more “square” dimension, the Reader is just passing on that image and using a “better” image from within the post.

  For your next post, can you try setting a featured image that is closer to the square width:height ratio and see if that makes a difference?
