Featured image not appearing in individual gallery

  I’ve set up my gallery page with the featured images from posts, but when you click on these individual galleries the featured images don’t appear. I want them to be the 1st image in each gallery.
  When I haven’t positioned them to be 1st they sometimes appear in the gallery.

  Also why can I have captions at the bottom of the images on the homepage but not on the gallery page or individual gallery images?
  Am I supposed to have a gallery page with a wall of photos and no clue as to what they link to? That seems a bit ridiculous.
