Featured image not being kept

I have a post with an image and a featured image which is the same file. If I amend the image externally i.e. place a watermark etc and re upload to the media library keeping the exact filename, the post retains the image (now updated) but does not maintain a featured image. I have to reassign it.

Is there a way around this, or am I doing something wrong?

WordPress.com doesn’t identy images by their file name but an unique ID in the media library and database.

First remove the old featured image, next set the new uploaded image to be the featured image.

    Thanks for the quick response.

My point was that I can delete an image in the media library and upload an image with the same filename and the post automatically uses that image instead. My point was that this isn’t replicated across to the featured image using the same file. It is now blank instead.

For instance if every image needed a watermark I could simply amend all the images externally, delete the media library and re-upload them. Providing the filename doesn’t alter, the posts now use the new image no problem. However the post’s featured image is now blank.

I guess my question should have been is there a way to ensure the new image is used for the featured image on the post without manually altering several hundred posts?

  • Hi there!

Automatically replacing images is possible with a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-media-replace/. To use any plugin here, on WordPress.com, you’d need plan Business:

You can reach out to the plugin developers before hand to make sure you’d be able to do exactly what you’re looking for, though. Since we do not develop plugins, we’re not experts in those :)
