Featured image on Hatch theme page
-
I have the option for it in the Meta Box and a thumbnail appears once I select an image but it does not appear when I publish the page (?)
Alternatively I would add a header image but I want a different image for each page and I don’t think Hatch supports this. I currently have a header image only on the “About” page.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Featured image on Hatch theme page
The Hatch theme doesn’t support featured images on static pages. WordPress.com doesn’t remove the ability to set featured images in a content type or location when using a theme that doesn’t support featured images in that content type or location. They just don’t display. Ordinarily, the corresponding theme guide would say where featured images may be displayed. Since the Hatch theme is retired, the page where it’s theme guide used to be provides little information.
Alternatively I would add a header image but I want a different image for each page and I don’t think Hatch supports this.
A different header image on each page is not supported on any WordPress.com theme that I’m aware of, not without a plugin that is. It might be possible with a plugin available to those on the Business Plan.

Something else I’m curious about: I added a header image and on my desktop using either Firefox or Explorer, the header image only shows up on the “about” page. Same on my laptop running Edge. However on my iPhone 5S the header image shows up on all of the static pages AND all of the posts.

Hi there,
This is happening because you have enabled the mobile theme option for your site. Since your site is responsive you can turn that option off (https://bipstravelblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=mobile-options) and the featured image will only show on your front page.

Thanks but, I would like non-mobile users to be able to see the header image across all pages and posts. Is there a way to enable that?

Hi folks, Hatch just doesn’t show the header on inside pages.
That said:

We actually have a handful of themes that can do that:
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/featured-image-header?s=featureAll of those will show your featured image as a header. Just note some of them crop the headers differently for mobile, so you’ll want to check out the demos and be mindful of how those display vs how your images might display. Be mindful of how the posts vs pages display, too.
Given all that, do you want to try switching to a newer theme? I’d suggest using “Try and Customize” then publishing when you’re happy (or mostly happy) with the results.

I was obviously talking only about what WordPress.com designates as “header images” and not what they identify as “featured images,” even featured images that replace header images. If a featured image replaces a header image, one might casually refer to it as a “header image,” but it hasn’t become what WordPress.com designates as a header image. You can’t manage the featured images on a site at Customize > Header Image.
I thought @peacemantja3 clearly distinguished between “header images” and “featured images.” I did likewise, as I normally do in the forums.
https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/featured-image-header?s=feature
All of those will show your featured image as a header.
@peacemantja3 specifies a desire to have “header images” display on pages as well as on posts. Some of those in the list you linked to do not display featured images on static pages (see my test results below).
Secondly, of the 71 themes listed at the filtered themes showcase link you provided, only 14 are free themes. For the first five of those 14 free themes, here are the results of my tests:
Intergalactic 2 — doesn’t display featured images on static pages
Independent Publisher 2 – doesn’t display featured images on static pages
Lodestar – doesn’t display featured images on static pages
Karuna – doesn’t display featured images on static pages
Affinity – doesn’t display featured images on static pagesI stopped after five.

Correction:
Oops! : -(
My test results reported above were all wrong. Apparently at some point I removed the featured image on the page I was testing and forgot to the reset another featured image. On retesting I find that each of the themes tested (Intergalactic 2, Independent Publisher 2, Lodestar, Karuna, and Affinity), featured images do display on static pages. This doesn’t affect the argument in the first two paragraphs of my post above.

To reiterate and be clear on what is happening on my old Hatch theme: it does not support a featured image on any page or post – understood.
Re: supernovia’s “Hi folks, Hatch just doesn’t show the header on inside pages:”
I can indeed add a header image and if viewed on a desktop browser such as Firefox it does display on the “about” page, but that is the only page it displays on (just like supernovia wrote above). HOWEVER, on my mobile device this Header image displays on All pages and All posts.I just wanted to report my experience and keep things accurate. Thank you both for helping and offering the information. Yes, I may try a current theme later on . . .

It does support featured images on single posts, as well as on the blog page and archive pages, but not on static pages, except a static page that is set as the homepage.
Examples from the Hatch demo:
1. single post w/ featured image
- a. https://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/his-ad-noster-splendide/
- b. https://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/2012/02/13/in-hac-habitasse-platea-dictumst/
2. blog page (homepage) w/ featured image – https://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/
3. archive pages w/ featured images:
- “featured” category page – https://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/category/featured/
- author archive page – https://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/author/themedemos/
- February 2012 archive page – https://hatchdemo.wordpress.com/2012/02/

That’s because your “About” page is set as the homepage or front page. The Hatch theme only displays the header image on the homepage.
HOWEVER, on my mobile device this Header image displays on All pages and All posts.
The reason for the different behavior on the mobile device is explained above by staff member @fstat in reply #3340051.

Fwiw, that featured images display on just one page (the homepage) with the mobile theme option disabled and on all static pages with it enabled is, to me at least, a very surprising result. I had no idea that the mobile theme setting could produce such different results with respect to where the header image displays on different devices. So thank you for bringing that to our attention. : -)
