Featured image on the reader

Despite me setting the featured image for a post (which has many images in it), when it appears in the reader it chooses a different image. Is there a way to force which image the reader chooses?
Also, is there a way to stop the reader from choosing any images for a post and just showing text?

Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.

If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria mentioned above, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

P.S. It is generally the first image in your post that displays in the Reader.

Thankyou for the clarification Timethief. I will look into it further. It seems to be using a gallery of thumbnail images as the featured image despite there being a single image at the top of the post and which I have set as the featured image. It seems to be ignoring that and going for the thumbnail gallery which is the second image on the post.
