Featured Image Position

  • Unknown's avatar

How can I change the position of my featured image? It automatically crops the image so the centre is featured…but I do not always want the centre. My theme is Sketch. Any help appreciated :) Maybe I have to edit the picture before I set it as a feature?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What you can do for Featured content and Featured images is stated here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/sketch/ Please consult that page and the related support docs linked to in it.

I have Googled and searched WordPress before submitting my question on here. I understand that the featured imaged can be chosen to appear as square, landscape or portrait. My question is rather; how can one reposition a photo within these formats, thus choosing which parts of the photo appears or is cropped? Maybe this is not possible? But if someone knows, a point in the right direction would be great, Thank you.

I don’t believe that is possible because we cannot edit templates underlying our themes on this multiuser blogging platform. I will tag this thread so Themes Staff provide a definitive answer. Thank you! I will keep an ear open and see. In the mean time I think I will just edit the pic before setting it as a featured image.

    That’s exactly what I would do. :)

Oh no! My blog has now decided to remove all my pictures… each appears only as a file name. On a different device they appear as blue question marks. On my media file gallery, any used images are also appearing the same, whilst unused images seem intact. Cleared browser etc. I don’t think this is meant to be..!

    Hi @snapsatual,

First, let’s take care of the broken image links and then we can look at the image size. It looks like the image on your homepage slider is broken as shown here:

    Starting on this page:

    https://perfectpetfotos.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=123&action=edit

Can you remove and then re-add the image in the bottom right-hand corner as shown here?

Do not delete anything. Stop doing and wait patiently for Staff assistance please. They will work their way forward to this thread as soon as they can.

    Hi there,

I have just followed your instructions but was unable to select the original pictures, as they also appear ‘broken’ on my media gallery page. Instead I have uploaded two different images, unused so far, and it works a treat. Maybe I have to upload all the photos I previously used again? If so, any tips on preventing the same thing from happening again?

    Thank you!

Maybe I have to upload all the photos I previously used again?

That’s odd – you shouldn’t need to re-upload the images. It doesn’t look like they’re deleted, just broken. Here’s an example:

    Other images here appear correctly:

Did you make edits to the photo within your media library by chance (cropping, rotating, etc)? There previously was an issue wherein multiple edits to the same image would cause it to get deleted, but that should be fixed up.

I think the best solution here would be to re-upload only the broken images in your Media Library (not all).

Thanks for your swift replies. The second link you sent- are all displaying correctly for you here? As they don’t seem to be on my browser. I agree with you, I think I will upload just the broken ones again. It’s not a biggy as I didn’t use many :)

What did I do to cause this…just so I can prevent it from happening once I add more photos!

I haven’t edited any photos in the media gallery.

    Thanks again!

I am seeing some broken links here so I don’t think it’s just your side:

    https://perfectpetfotos.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php

I’m not 100% sure what caused this. The issue that I thought was causing the images to deleted has been fixed so I’m a bit puzzled. If this happens again, can you let me know?

Next, we can tackle the featured image position. Just to clarify, you’re referring to the image in the slider. Is that correct?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

Yes, slider and featured images (I think they are the same?). Sorry to compare to Facebook….but you know cover photos, the way you can wiggle them around to your chosen composition, well I was just wondering if you can do the same with this feature?

I’m afraid my brain freezes over the the mention of html or programming! But if I am missing something simple, it would be great to know. Otherwise I feel the best solution would be to simply edit before I post.

    Thanks for your time :)

    Hi!

Thanks for confirming! Unfortunately, it won’t be possible to change which portion of the image the featured slider grabs. The best solution would be to crop your image to 1092 x 400 prior to uploading. That’s the size of the image in your featured slider so the image shouldn’t be adjusted at all since it’s already the correct size!

Thanks again! All makes sense now… and all my photos are back to normal :)

Great! Let us know if that issue happens again.
