  How do I use a slideshow in the featured image area instead of in the content? Is it possible?

  You cannot chnage how any theme is designed to function. Every theme has a detailed theme description page and like this one at https://wordpress.com/theme/sela and that’s where set up instructions for it and the live demo site link is found.
