Featured image snaps to the wrong picture

On the homepage of my website, the first article always shows the same featured image. Here’s an example. It looks like this for a few seconds:
before it snaps to this:
I took the photo down and the article it is tied with but it is still showing up like that. I even deleted my cache and it’s still showing up, no matter the browser too.

On WordPress.com this usually happens due to caching or Jetpack’s Site Accelerator serving an older image.
A few quick things you can try:
- Clear cache → Try in an Incognito/Private browser window to confirm.
- Disable Site Accelerator → Go to Settings → Performance and toggle off “Speed up image load times” to see if the correct image loads.
Jetpack Site Accelerator guide - Check theme behavior → Some themes preload one featured image and then swap it with another via JavaScript. You can test this by switching temporarily to a default theme like Twenty Twenty-Five.
If the issue only shows up with your current theme, I’d suggest contacting the theme’s support directly.

Hello! So I tried those options and, yes, it only appears on my current theme. Would the WordPress forum here be the best place to reach out to for Carmack support?

Since you’re using the Carmack theme on WordPress.com and it’s a theme-specific issue, I’d recommend tagging this thread with modlook so the WordPress.com staff can take a look and help you with this.
In the meantime, you could temporarily switch to a default theme like Twenty Twenty-Five to keep your site running smoothly while this gets resolved.
The staff will be able to investigate the featured image caching issue with the Carmack theme specifically.

Thank you for sharing all of this information. Since you’ve shared that you’re using the Carmack theme, and the issue appears to be theme-specific, I wanted to mention that this is a retired theme, and our support is limited for retired themes.
