Featured Image used to work, now does not.

Hello, I’m a very very new user, so please bear with me if I’m not using the terms correctly. I’m trying to use a different image for each of the banners for the 4 pages I’ve created so far. I’m using Twenty Eleven, and I understand that for a featured image to work I need to scale them to 1000×288 pixels. So far it has worked correctly for three of the four pages. It used to work for the blog page (my journal page – I can’t stand the word “blog”!) and then it stopped. I deleted the picture and uploaded it again, no success. I destroyed the picture and created another one. no success. I uploaded an entirely different picture. No success. I attempted a different format. You guessed it, no success. I don’t understand why it would work fine, then suddenly stop, why the others work just fine even now, and how I can go about fixing this problem. I would appreciate some insight!

If you mean you try uploading an image and setting it as a featured image to the “Journal” page, it won’t work: when you set a page as your posts page in Settings > Reading, you no longer see that (static) page, you only borrow its title to create the menu link to the dynamic posts page. The header image you want to see when you click “Journal” must be uploaded in Appearance > Header.

Forgive me, but I’m still a little confused. I want two different images. One for my static “welcome” page, one for my non-static “journal”/post page. If I’m reading you correctly, this is not possible? The welcome page and the journal page must mirror each other?

No, you’re not reading correctly. The image for the welcome page must be set as a featured image to that page, the image for the journal/posts page must be uploaded in Appearancee > Header.

I tried to set the featured image, but it didn’t affect the photo that was on the welcome page in the gallery format post. in fact a photo from my library that I didn’t use in the post itself is being displayed. how do I change this photo that is being displayed?

@seoulwinner: You do it by setting a featured image to that page, but the image won’t show up if it’s not large enough. Go to Appearance > Header and check the suggested dimensions: images you use as featured images have to be in those dimensions (or larger, if you don’t mind the cropping).
