Featured images don't appear in the reader

Hi, I have a question about featured images and the reader.
I have the Fontfolio theme and I always choose a featured image to go with my post. But it’s never the photo that appears in the reader. I figured out now that the Reader chooses the pics to display in this order: If there’s a photo gallery in the post, the gallery is displayed in the reader, no matter if I have chosen a different featured image. How can I change that? I want the featured image to appear in the reader, because I choose it very carefully as it is representative of the post.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot chnage the image display in the Reader.

Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.

If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead.

When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria mentioned above, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

Featured image dimensions are critical to display.

The latest post’s featured image on the blog page is 562 x 461, cropped.
Any subsequent post’s featured image on the blog and archive pages is 282 x 211, cropped. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/fontfolio/

    Sorry, but I don’t understand.

How can the Reader go for the featured image first, if the featured image never meets the size requirements?

    ok, thank you.
Just as additional information: I always write my posts in the Standard Post Format.

  • Hi there!

The way our RSS feeds work is that it pulls and displays the first image it finds inside the post content. Since the featured image isn’t part of the content, the chances of it showing up in the feed are dim. If this is extremely important to you though, you may want to include the featured image in the post as well. Let me know if you have further questions. Cheers!

Hi, I’ve figured this out already. I started to use the featured image as first image in my content. But – if there’s a gallery later in the content, the reader chooses the the gallery, not the first (single) image.
Why can’t you change the settings, so that the reader uses the featured images? I think most people want to have control over the image that appears in the reader.

That is true, I would have wished it worked that way as well. Unfortunately, feeds depend a lot on what it’s seeing in your post content as if it was a person reading it. Rest assured that your suggestion will be heard by the team.

Meanwhile, it’s good to know that inserting the image at the top of the post content works for you. Please feel free to reach out if you need help with anything else. Thanks!
