Featured Images in Editing
-
When editing a page, the Featured Image choice (bottom right sidebar of Edit) allows a “featured image” be inserted either into the post or as a featured image. Is / can this be page specific, or are you just editing a widget image which is applied to all pages? Does that make sense.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

P.S. – I get that if it’s inserted into a post, that’s where it will show up. I’m trying to get a featured image by page in the right sidebar.

Depending on the theme you’re using, the featured image will appear in the header of the Post or Page you’ve attached it to.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/To get a featured image in your blog’s sidebar, try the Image Widget. You can link to whatever Post or Page you choose, but you can only use the Image Widget once.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/image-widget/Alternatively, you could also put the image link in a Text Widget, and you can use as many of those as you wish and even put multiple images in the same Text Widget.

Thanks! It took me a while just to find may way back here. I seem to be having trouble navigating – and I’m usually pretty good at things like this. Great information and detail. I’m [trying] to use Vigilance theme. I think my problem is your 2nd paragraph above. Once you use an image widget, you’re done (?) I was hoping the image widget in a sidebar could be page dependent – Maybe sidebar layout the same throughout, but each page would have a slightly different image in the same place in the sidebar.
Can you get an image to show in a text widget, or just a link to the image? I think I’m trying to do things that require html or CSS knowledge. Time for a class!

If you aren’t familiar with HTML, the easiest way to make text/images/links for the Text Widget is to write what you want to appear in the Text Widget in a draft Post/Page in the Visual Editor, and then switch to the HTML editor, copy and paste what’s there to the Text Widget.
Classes are always an excellent idea. :)

While WordPress.com gives you the option to use a featured image as a Custom header on a specific Post or Page, the sidebar is static, meaning whatever is in the sidebar appears on all pages wherever the sidebar shows up.
I know that some of our CSS wizards will be happy to prove me wrong.

You’re a genius! Seriously, not only do you fully understand the question(s), your answers are clear and concise. Using the text editor for a WYSIWYG draft post then copying the HTML to the text widget . . . brilliant! Akin to the elegant simplicity and universally functional design of the nautilus shell and other fractals! Can’t believe I didn’t think of it :-)
No kidding. You moved me along nicely and saved me a ton of time. If you have any recommendations for HTML / CSS tutorials or references / books specific to use in WP, (beyond WP tutorials) please pass them along. Thanks again.
