featured images with wordpress.com
-
I am using wordpress.com the free template I chose is Misty Lake. The demo says it supports feature images but when I insert using the feature image box nothing shows up on the page or post. do I need to upgrade to Premium for this feature?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, no you don’t need to upgrade to Premium to enable an existing theme feature.
While it says in the theme’s showcase page https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/misty-lake/ that this theme supports featured images, it really isn’t clear where those images are displayed. Perhaps the featured image only appears when a certain Post format is used. And again this is odd because while it says on the theme’s showcase page that it supports Post Formats, Misty Lake is not listed on the Support document listing of themes that support Post Formats. https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-formats/
So reading through the previous forum discussions on Misty Lake, I did find this Staff reply https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/featured-headers-on-misty-lake-theme?replies=8#post-1935907:
The Misty Lake theme does support Featured Images, but those images aren’t used as header images. Misty Lake always uses the default header or your Custom Header Image as the header image.
That’s my long-winded way of saying, it’s not really clear so I’ve tagged this for Staff input. Please be patient while waiting for their reply on this holiday weekend.

Hi there,
With Misty Lake, featured images only appear on the main Posts page/default home page, but not on individual posts or pages. If you want the image to appear on the single-post view you will need to add it to the post content as well.
The featured image is also displayed with the post preview in the Reader, as with all themes.
Let me know if you have any more questions about this.

thank you so much, this confirms what I thought…very confusing as it seems in initial specs to support this feature fully…I’m learning slowly that the terminology used is very broad as to how it’s applied! Much appreciated!

Justjennifer, really appreciate follow up…will be patient and explore other options in the meantime–it’s not clear at all for this specific theme. I guess there isn’t a way to find out from theme details before installing how the feature image is displayed?

If a theme supports featured images, all it really means is that you can assign featured images to a post/page, but each theme displays/uses featured images differently. I understand how this can be confusing, though :)
What I would suggest is that you create a test blog, with different types of posts, a gallery or two, and featured images assigned to some posts and pages. Then you can use that to try out new themes and see how they work before you activate it on your main blog.
You can also spot how featured images are used on the theme’s demo page, but that’s not always obvious unless you know what to look for.
If you specifically want a theme that uses the featured image as the post’s custom header image, you can look at the themes at this link: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/custom-post-header/

thank you Kokkieh, I just spent the last couple days doing what you suggested: I tried a few test pages and posts with other themes. helped me to at least see what a feature image could look like when working properly. Still haven’t been able to figure out if it’s not working on Misty Lake (or I just can’t figure out where to look) but either way I decided it wasn’t the theme for me. I’m a bit surprised that such a touted component is so confusing to use (with no standardization) but am realizing there are many things not very intuitive with wordpress. thanks for your help, much appreciated

Not all themes behave/display in the same way and how boring it would be if they did!
Part of the confusion is user expectation. That’s not aimed at you; just a sum of my experience here (including my own). :)

I tend to agree with you that not everything is as intuitive as it could be, but you are always welcome to ask if you’re not sure of something. We’re also open to suggestions on how we can improve WordPress.com. In this case I’ll look if we can clarify the documentation for Misty Lake regarding the featured images. And again this is odd because while it says on the theme’s showcase page that it supports Post Formats, Misty Lake is not listed on the Support document listing of themes that support Post Formats.
We’re currently working on improving the system how we tag themes with the features they support so one can more easily find a theme based on specific features.
