featured pages on homepage?

Some themes (such as oxygen) allow you to display featured posts on your homepage. Is there a way to do that with pages? Is there a template that supports that? Is there a way to jury-rig it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no way to do it automatically. You could create a sticky Post and link to your Pages that you want to feature, but that’s about it.

There are many themes that have front page slider for featured images > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/
But you cannot create a post slider on the theme that is not deigned to have one. -

Is there a way to feature PAGES (with static content) rather than POSTS? I’m just using wordpress to make a website, it won’t have any posts

Pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ are for content that rarely changes. Pages and sit outside the blog structure.
Static pages cannot have Categories and Tags assigned to them.
Pages do not appear in our RSS feeds.
Most Pages do not have date stamps in their URLs.
Pages have very little “google juice”
Other bloggers rarely if ever backlink to static Pages in their published posts. Consequently, Page structured blogs have a very difficult time:
1. securing traffic;
2. securing comments;
3. securing backlinks;
4. achieving authority in their niche;
5. achieving Google PageRank. -

Multiple factors but the primary one is frequent publication of fresh and unique material that’s not found anywhere else on the internet. Note that is the opposite of a Page which is for static content that rarely ever changes.

Or if you want the bald faced truth then I won’t hesitate to say that the average website found online today is rarely updated, does not provide for interactive communication, and is IMNHO a lame blog with static front page that sucks when it comes to SEO.
A blog does something a website doesn’t do. A blog allows you to personally reach and interact with far more people than you can reach by any other means. Advice: Don’t kill your traffic by creating a static front page.

so how do regular websites make themselves attractive to search engines? For example, if I google “organic alaska,” the top two hits are not blogs.

1) both of those sites have been around for some time using those urls
2) there is very, very little competition for that search term.
in my estimation: A blog updated weekly with relevant, high quality content would outrank both of those sites within four months. Updated daily, within a month.
