Featured post images suddenly not showing up on Facebook
-
I’ve had this blog a long time, and I’ve changed nothing recently. Suddenly, featured images are not the ones showing up in FB posts; instead, it’s the first image on the left side of the page.
When will this be corrected, and why is it happening? It’s not on my end, I know that much.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Mike!
I did a bit of testing with one of your recent posts:
Letter from Lovecraft to Houdini about Edgar Allan Poe’s desk
When I try to share that on Facebook, I receive a featured image from the article:
Is this issue only happening when your posts are shared automatically through Publicize (not manually by copying and pasting the URL)? If so, can you try to make sure the featured image is a bit bigger (currently it’s 500ishx500ish for that post)? To explain further, Facebook tries to grab the best image for a given URL. So, if a URL on your sidebar has a much higher quality, it may grab that image instead. It should grab images in this order though:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/#images-in-publicize
Let me know if setting a slightly larger image for your featured image works on your next post!

I have the same issue. The blog I need help with is https://spiceinthecity.wordpress.com/
I get the issue even when I manually share the link and even after I have added a ‘large’ featured image. -
Hi @spiceinthecity. After a post/page from a site has been shared to Facebook, Facebook stores images from the site in a cache. Sometimes, when posts/pages are shared from the site, these cached images are displayed instead of the post’s Featured Image. You can use Facebook’s Debug tool to force a refresh of the cache:
http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
After pasting your link into the box on that page, choose the ‘Fetch new scrape information’ option and then try sharing your post/page on Facebook again to see if the correct image is then displaying.

Jeremy, I appreciate the post, but FB has had no trouble with images before — the image it’s grabbing now is NOT the best one, it’s very small. Hope someone can help.
-
@lovecraftezine: Would you be able to provide an example post for which Facebook is showing an incorrect image? The Debug tool, which I explained to @spiceinthecity, might help in your case also:
http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug
Could you give that a try and let me know you get on? Thanks!

It seems obvious to me that WordPress has done some sort of update. Googling the problem shows fixes for wordpress.org, but none for wordpress.com.
I really need this fixed. It’s frustrating, because this is something I’m paying for and it’s not working. It seems that every so often WordPress “fixes” something that doesn’t need to be fixed, and it gums everything up.
-
I should say, googling the problem indicates also that MANY people are having this same issue. So it’s not an issue with my site; rather, it must be an issue with WordPress.

Hi Mike.
Since my last reply to you, we’ve had a few more reports of this issues on WordPress.com. We believe this is related to an issue on Facebook’s end and have contacted them. I’ll let you know when we hear back.

Hi KooLee. I’m going to answer your question over on your thread here:

Hi @lovecraftezine: Facebook have implemented a fix for the issue you were facing, and it shouldn’t come up again for new shares. They’ve asked if any further issues can be reported to the following thread:
https://developers.facebook.com/bugs/1565027973760906/?comment_id=446866062156987
Hope that helps!
