  How do I make the featured posts appear instead of a banner?

  Just figured it out. Go to Customizer then under Featured Content, enter the word “featured” or what ever tag you wish to feature in the featured content slider. Make sure that the article which you want featured is posted with that tag. Beautiful and cool theme.
