featured sticky posts stopped showing up in blog feed in twenty fourteen theme

My site tucsonmonthly.com abruptly stopped posting the featured posts to the blog (immediately after recent theme/widget/wp update..i’m actually unsure which as I updated all at once) and can only be accessed via a click from the featured post grid. Checking previous forum posts of similar incident I’ve tried the deactivation/reactivation of widgets troubleshooting, but to no avail. Any other suggestions?

I should also note that I went into the settings>reading and although it’s set to summary and not full post, the site loads the full post. It seems that there’s some kind of interruption between the preference save and the execution.

Hi there! The Twenty Fourteen theme let’s you choose whether to show or hide the Featured Posts from your main blog feed. It’s possible that this setting got reset when you made your updates.
Can you please login to your Dashboard, and navigate to Appearance > Customize? Then, expand the “Featured Content” section and look for the option titled “Display tag content in all listings.” Check the box off, and then save your settings. Here’s a screenshot for reference:

two things, my twenty fourteen doesn’t have the black background and the other is it is showing a broken image in the header when i do not have a header image…please help.
