Featured tag disappears during edits

Tortuga theme support said I should bring this question here. One annoying l thing I’ve noticed … If I go in to one of my featured posts to edit or alter something, more often than not the “featured” tag I’ve set disappears and the post drops out of the slider. I usually notice it and set the “featured” tag again right away. But obviously it shouldn’t be happening. Any fix in the works for this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Good morning –

This does sound like an issue on our end. Thanks for getting in touch. Can you send me links to posts where this tag has gone missing?

There was a known issue with this behavior a while ago but it was fixed. We need to take a closer look at what’s happening.

This morning I had three posts in my slider. I clicked “edit” on each one and only the wildlife photography post still had it’s “featured” tag; the other two posts did not, even though they were still in the slider. Then I returned to the edit screen for the Ocasek post —https://piedtype.com/2019/09/17/ocasek-was-just-what-i-needed/ — and clicked on “update” and because the “featured” tag was no longer there, it dropped out of the slider.

Currently there are two posts in the slider; one still has its “featured” tag and one does not.

Go ahead and clear your browser cache. Here’s how:

Afterwards, take another look at the slider and associated featured tags. Let me know if there’s a difference.

When looking at the overall post list (first 5 pages) I only see 3 posts that have any tag assigned to them at all.

I can confirm that there are no tags assigned to Ocasek.

What is the title of the Wildlife post?

I cleared the cache. Now neither post in the slider has a featured tag. (I use very few tags — usually only “featured” and “wide-format.”) The wildlife photography post is the one in the slider – “Vote for your favorite Comedy Wildlife photograph.”
Yes, when the Ocasek post dropped its tag, I let it go and did not re-tag it.

Open the Customizer ->Featured Content, and uncheck the box next to ” Do not display tag in post details and tag clouds.” The edit the posts and add the tag to them again. Do the posts keep the tag if you edit them now?

Next enable that checkbox again. Do the tags start disappearing?

The last time this happened it was a problem with the API related to that setting, so I’m just trying to confirm if that same issue might be back.

I unchecked the box you specified, then went to the edit screen for each of those posts. Oddly, they both now showed the “featured” tag enabled; I didn’t have to add it.

I went back and unchecked the specified box. Then I looked at both posts again. The wildlife photography post still had its featured tag, but the webcam post had dropped its tag. Go figure. But I guess it was erratic to begin with. Sometimes the featured tag dropped and sometimes it didn’t.
