Features disappearing bit by bit

I have had my WordPress account since 2013. It is a free account and will stay so until I run out of space, which will be a while. I have noticed, though, that little by little, WordPress has been stealing away features. They apparently think things they once gave me for free should only come at a price.

Right now, the issue I have is WordPress won’t let me follow more blogs. I follow more than 500, but when I try to subscribe to a new one, it tells me my email address is invalid. I assure you that it’s not.

Bottom line, I’m not signing up for a paid plan. I just want what I originally agreed to.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi,

WordPress.com plans, paid or free, are not set in stone and evolve over time. While we understand that it will not work for everyone, we are proud to have offered the ability to create a free website on WordPress.com for over 15 years now.

I follow more than 500, but when I try to subscribe to a new one, it tells me my email address is invalid.

This is odd. Does it happen if you are clicking “follow” on a blog you are viewing? Or if you try to add a site to follow through the WordPress.com Reader? Or both? And does it happen if you use a different browser?

I doubt it was ever agreed that you could follow an infinite number of blogs
Following 500 blogs is rather a lot don’t you think? WordPress.com does limit excessive following so as not to break something on this shared platform and upset other users. I don’t think upgrading to a paid plan would change things.

Regarding the question of how I subscribe to blogs: It varies. Sometimes I enter my email address and sometimes I click the link in the bottom right corner.

  • The system does try to combat those who use follows to spam out their own sites, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue in this case.

And, while I’m sure there is some technically-imposed eventual upper limit to thoughtful follows, it’s really not something we’d start charging for.

    @egrisham
, I’ve got some questions to hopefully help us get to the bottom of this.

Sometimes I enter my email address and sometimes I click the link in the bottom right corner.

Are you getting the email address error in both cases, and is it happening intermittently or every time you try to follow a site?

And, would you mind us testing with your account so we can see more about the error?
