Features of paid plans on wordpress.com
-
I want to shift to wordpress.com paid plan (Personal or premium) but first need answer to a few questions –
1 – Last time I hosted with Hostgator but used wordpress to design websites. But my websites got hacked – does wordpress.com provide protection against that?
2- It says built-in plugins – does that mean we wont be able to install SEO, Jetpack or any other plugin we want to?
3- Would wordpress team help em if I am stuck at some point while designing my website? -
I’m certainly not an expert, but my impression is:
1) I don’t think wordpress.com would provide anything significantly different than hostgator with regards to hacking protection. You still need to follow general good practices, like making your users have strong passwords, two-factor authentication (plugin), keeping WordPress and plugins up to date, etc. There are a lot of aspects to it, and it can definitely be overwhelming, but here is somewhere you could start.
2) I believe they just pre-install some plugins for you, but you’re then free to install additional ones.
3) I don’t think the WordPress team helps with site design, probably more along the lines of technical problems with the domain or hosting? Depends on what you get stuck on :-)

Hi there,
1 – Last time I hosted with Hostgator but used wordpress to design websites. But my websites got hacked – does wordpress.com provide protection against that?
WordPress.com uses a modified version of the open source WordPress software, and the only way someone could “hack” one of your sites, is if they managed to gain access to your WordPress.com username account. You can find detailed information on the security features built into WordPress.com here:
If you want to use custom themes or plugins on our Business Plan, that does create a new attack vector that hackers could potentially exploit to hack your site directly, but all our Business Plan sites have the Jetpack Professional plan enabled by default which includes automatic plugins updates and realtime backups and security scanning, and we have a team who pro-actively addresses security threats by, for example, automatically disabling problematic plugins when a security issue is found.
2- It says built-in plugins – does that mean we wont be able to install SEO, Jetpack or any other plugin we want to?
WordPress.com comes with features from many popular plugins pre-installed. Everything in Jetpack, for example, is already part of WordPress.com, as the purpose of Jetpack is actually to make some features we built on WordPress.com, available for self-hosted WordPress sites as well.
WordPress.com sites are fully optimised for SEO right out of the box, so you can only focus on your content. However, if you want more control over that you can install a plugin like Yoast SEO on our Business Plan, or any other plugin you’d like to use.
3- Would wordpress team help em if I am stuck at some point while designing my website?
We don’t provide design services, but we’re happy to help with explaining how to do something if you can tell us what it is you want to do. All our paid plans come with both live chat and email support.
Thanks for trying to help. However, I’m going to ask that if you don’t know the answer, and aren’t able to link to documentation or recent forum threads that contain an authoritative answer, rather tag the thread for staff or leave for a more experienced volunteer to answer.
If you haven’t yet, I recommend you have a look at our volunteer guidelines here:
If you have any questions about volunteering you’re welcome to open your own thread and tag it for staff, and we can answer you there.
