Feedback about our plugin
-
Dear WordPress Community,
Last year, we released our first plugin, a two-panel file manager (https://wordpress.com/plugins/two-panel-file-manager), similar to Norton, Volkov, or Total Commander. We observed the stats and were surprised to see that, after several hundred downloads, it had only been installed on a handful of machines, at least according to the stats WordPress disclosed. This is a very bad ratio (around 1:100), which means a lot of people try it, but almost no one likes it. But since we haven’t received any feedback at all, we cannot fix the problems people may have encountered.
We would like to implore the Community to provide some constructive criticism about the plugin: what could be improved?- The configuration: too convoluted, too complicated, too unintuitive?
- The manual: too much? Too little? Or does it not clarify the critical pieces sufficiently?
- The feature list: does it need something crucial that the plugin lacks?
- The concept: does simply no one need a two-panel file manager for WordPress?
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I’m afraid you are unlikely to get any feedback here as this forum is for free sites hosted at WordPress.com. Here I couldn’t install your plugin without upgrading to a Business plan. The whole point of people using WordPress.com is so they don’t have to mess around with the file structure of their sites.

That is most weird: i could download the free version from the link above. Can you please tell us what exactly did you do?

If you want to use plugins on the wordpress.com platform, you can only do so on the Business Plan or higher – https://wordpress.com/support/plugins/install-a-plugin/

Hi @info61df389ba26,
Thank you for reaching out to the WordPress.com community for feedback on your plugin. It’s great to see developers actively seeking input to improve their products.
As noted by the commenters above, on WordPress.com, only sites on the Business plan or higher have the capability to install plugins. You may still reach some users on WordPress.com who are on WordPress.com Business or higher plan with this forum thread. But to gather more comprehensive feedback, I recommend expanding your outreach to other platforms where developers and WordPress enthusiasts are active.
Consider posting in the WordPress.org forum here: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/miscellaneous/ and also on relevant subreddit communities related to WordPress such as https://www.reddit.com/r/Wordpress/ or https://www.reddit.com/r/WordpressPlugins/.
Additionally, platforms like X (formerly Twitter) can also be effective for reaching out to a broader audience.
Wishing you the best of luck and looking forward to seeing how your plugin evolves with community feedback!

I am not sure if i understood it correctly. If one has no business plan, then cannot download the plugin’s free version at all? If this is the case, then sorry, i did not know this. It is weird, because this account surely has no business plan and i can download it. But from the wordpress.org portal, it surely can be downloaded: http://wordpress.org/plugins/two-panel-file-manager/
Thank you for the kind words, we’re trying our best.
This no free plugin without a business plan is still not clear to me: i just registered this account here yesterday and i am sure i have no business plan, yet i can download our plugin’s free version. You do not have the download button marked on this screenshot? https://wpcoderz.com/custimg/wordpress.com/tpfm-download.png
We already tried to post a topic on wordpress.org’s forum, but it was deleted in a few hours, without any disclosed reason and any feedback. Granted, it was not in the miscellanous subforum (it was in the developer one), but that subforum has a pinned topic (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/please-do-not-post-links-to-your-site-looking-for-feedback/) which clearly tells us, to not post topics there, asking for feedback. I do not know if it is just for sites, or everything, including plugins and also i do not know, if it is just means the miscellanous subforum, or the entire forum. The rules are not clear. Thank you for suggesting Reddit, i think we’ll try that one. As for X, i think the characterlimit would limit effective communication, but thanks for the idea anyway.

Hi @info61df389ba26
Thank you for the reply. I can see where the confusion might come from.Just to clarify the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:
- WordPress.org is the open-source platform where you can download the WordPress software and install it on your own hosting. It gives you full control, including the ability to install any plugins or themes you like, such as your two-panel file manager.
- WordPress.com is a hosted service that takes care of things like security, backups, performance, and software updates for you. While the Free , Personal and Premium plans don’t allow third-party plugin installation, the Business plan or higher unlocks that feature. Many users choose WordPress.com for its convenience, built-in features (like Jetpack stats and spam protection), and managed support.
You can read more about the differences here:
https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-orgHope this helps clarify things and that you’re able to gather more insight through other channels as well!

Thank you for the clarification. However, i still do not understand, why i do have a download button, when i only have a free plan. Nevertheless, it can surely be downloaded from wordpress.org. If anyone downloads it from there and tries it, any feedback is very much appreciated.

You may be able to see that link and possibly even download something onto your PC. The problem would be if you wanted to INSTALL this on a free WordPress.com site. You would not be able to. If you are a developer I would have thought you would understand the different tiers of WordPress.com. WordPress.com has a vast array of plugins available for people on the appropriate higher plans.
WordPress.com free sites are all on one shared platform so plugins are limited to the pre-loaded approved ones.
