If I reg. a domain, softskillsbrunei.com, with you, how do I transfer the contents of bruneisoftskills.wordpress.com there? Is there a fast and easy way to do that?

  • There is no FTP access on WordPress.com, but you also don’t need it here.

Click on My Site ->Switch Site and select bruneisoftskills.wordpress.com. Then click on Domains ->Add.

When you add the domain the contents of the free address will automatically appear at the custom domain you bought. In other words, the domain you register is simply applied over the existing content, like putting a slip cover on a book. The book stays exactly the same, only the way it looks from the outside changes.

The same with your site. You don’t need to transfer anything, as your site will stay exactly as it is now. It will only appear at the new address. The free address will also still exist, but visitors to your site won’t see it in their browsers.

select bruneisoftskills.wordpress.com. Then click on Domains ->Add.

What if I wish to use “softskillsbrunei” instead? How do I make it work?

  • The two sites in your account are bruneisoftskills.wordpress.com and mahathirbrunei.wordpress.com.

That’s why I said to select that site before adding the domain. You can only add a domain to a free address you already own.

You used to own softskillsbrunei.wordpress.com, but you deleted that site a week ago. As the warning on the page where you had to confirm the deletion stated, if a site is deleted that WordPress.com address is permanently removed from our system and cannot be registered again.

I overlooked that bit when deleting softskillsbrunei.

I am sure there must be a way round this problem. What if I register the domain name elsewhere and then use it here at WordPress.com?
If that is possible, what is the quickest way to transfer the contents

    P/S

What if I register the domain name elsewhere

Do I pay twice, one to the other domain name provider and secondly to WordPress?

  • Hi @mahathirbrunei, I hope you don’t mind me jumping in to help.

You are welcome to register a domain here, no problem. That can be done here: https://wordpress.com/domains

You just would not be able to use domains you have previously deactivated.

Quick tip on Gmail: in the searchbox, type in:all and search for your site name. That will look through spam, trash, and everything else.

Also, make sure you don’t have any filters in place that could be deleting the email before you see it.

I have already registered the domain with the desired name and masked forwarded to the one at WordPress. It was not the ideal solution but one that is the best for now.

I would like to suggest that WordPress let the owners of deactivated domains reinstate it within a reasonable time frame. People may have deactivated a domain for various reasons, mistake, not understanding, etc.

Please take it up with the people at WordPress.

    Regards
    Mahathir

  • Masked forwards are a mess for SEO, bookmarking, and more. It’s up to you but if you bought a domain elsewhere, I recommend mapping it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Next best option is an unmasked forward.
