Feedback on the change in Switch Sites behavior

  • Unknown's avatar

    Howdy,

Up until a day or two ago, the Switch Sites button at the top of my site’s dashboard sidebar displayed only my chosen “Visible” sites from the global dashboard at https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs

Logged in now and using that same Switch Sites button brings up ALL my sites, both visible and hidden.

This is a huge mess for me with the number of sites and test sites that I have. My “Visible” sites are the ones I’m currently working on and want easy access to front and center. To have to scan or search that list to get to the site I want to open is beyond annoying.

If this isn’t a temporary change, I would like to see the behavior of Switch Sites reverted to what it was previously, only Visible sites in my sidebar.

    Thanks for listening.

  • Hello Jennifer!

Your observation is correct: we’ve recently changed our switch site panel to display ‘Hidden’ sites. At the same time, we also added a new ‘Magic’ sort option, which can be selected on the Sites page ( https://wordpress.com/sites ).

Our hope is that the ‘Magic’ sort option magically brings the most relevant sites to the top of your list. Maybe this isn’t the case for you? If so, it’d be great to learn more about which sites you’re seeing, and which sites you’d expect to see.
    We appreciate the feedback!

As you’re probably aware, new features sometimes need a few tweaks, and we’re grateful to be able to discuss this directly.

Hi Adam, Were you maybe referring to https://wordpress.com/blog/2022/09/01/introducing-a-new-way-to-access-all-your-sites/ where I also left my feedback https://wordpress.com/blog/2022/09/01/introducing-a-new-way-to-access-all-your-sites/#comment-424882

FWIW-Magic sort isn’t doing what I need, which is to keep my visible sites front and center so I can get to them quickly. Magic does pop up the sites I’ve recently visited/worked on, but those aren’t necessarily the ones I want to have handy.

  • Thanks, I’ve shared that feedback, and I can understand your point of view since we also manage numerous test sites. We can’t offer a short-term solution since using hidden sites is uncommon among most site owners, and the implementation had some performance issues.

For the time being, I’ve been using the filter for private sites to keep my test sites separate, so this is a mostly “normal” view of my active sites: https://wordpress.com/sites?status=public.

I understand, though, that is not a perfect solution. It has been suggested that the ability to “Favorite” sites to pin them to the top of the list would be a good enhancement, but we would not have a timeline for when or if that functionality would be added. Would the ability to “favorite” sites be more helpful?

    Appreciate your response and suggestions.

Here, too, that sort filter doesn’t bring up my main test site which I use almost daily when answering questions here in the forums, but which isn’t public.

Favorites might help, but will it reduce the number of sites appearing in my dashboard’s sidebar or will I still have to visit the new Sites page? If the latter, it requires an additional step for me to get where I want to go. :/

  • Hi Jennifer,

Yes, the idea is that favorites would be placed at the top of the list in the sidebar.

    OK-thanks @fotis for clarifying!
