Feedback Thread for the Block Editor

  • Unknown's avatar

    If every new account since December something is the same in this respect, then it would be more clear and accurate to say, “No accounts created since December __ 2019 presently have access to the Classic Editor. All users with new accounts that want access to Classic Editor on a site must ask staff to enable access to that editor.”

  • Unknown's avatar

    @musicdoc1, As @kokkieh said earlier

    To discuss this further, please create a new thread or make a post on the volunteers blog. The intent for this sticky thread is for feedback on the block editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Meanwhile, again, can someone clarify: does the problem of absence of classic editor apply only to new accounts, or also to new sites in existing old accounts?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @justjennifer
    People who use and/or read this site are those interested in the block editor and all about it and its shortcomings.
    If all sorts of other threads are started on the same topic, where do we find them?
    The main page for the fora (or forums) only gives a reference to those started in the past few hours.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @just
    1. You keep on about new threads, all this discussion is ENTIRELY feedback on the block editor.
    2.

    This has been the “norm” since last December.
    But we’re “grinding water” here on something that we know is currently in flux, where we do not yet know how WordPress.com will implement the changeover or how access to the Classic Editor in WP Admin will be implemented. It might be better to wait until the dust has settled in order to provide feed back on that.

    The norm since last December is currently in flux. We do not yet know how WordPress.com will do what they have already been doing since last December. Are we talking about what they are going to do yesterday? Somehow I am a bit confused.
    3. Why wait till the dust has settled and it is too late to change, especially as we have been asked for feedback on the block editor in this thread.?

    @halilac you asked in part of this comment to @justjennifer (and I quote):

    “If all sorts of other threads are started on the same topic, where do we find them?
    The main page for the fora (or forums) only gives a reference to those started in the past few hours.”

    The main page of the forum shows the most recent posts from all the forums, of which there are many. If you look to the right of the recent posts area you’ll see links to the different forms, but to save you the effort, they are (with the site’s descriptions of them):

    As for how you can find them, the easiest way is to type tags or keywords (such as ‘Block Editor’) in the search area at the top of most forum pages here. Clicking the magnifying glass icon beside the search area or pressing the Enter key on your keyboard will set the search in motion. When you see the results of your search, you can further filter the results by clicking on the ‘Relevance’, ‘Oldest’, ‘Newest’ buttons above them, and by using Topic Tag and Month filters to the right of the results.

    You can also follow replies of specific staff, moderators and volunteers (and yourself) by clicking on their username that is to the left of any of their (or your) posts and comments on the forums. That will take you to their profile. If you then click on ‘Replies Created’ (for replies to posts) or ‘Topics Started’ for posts that person has started, you’ll see the threads they’ve commented in, in chronological order of responding with the newest at the top.

    One other thing. Please try not to shorten people’s usernames when you use the @ symbol in front of them. I’m not sure if you understand this but how it works is that the @ symbol next to the name turns it into a link that notifies that person and, separately, also takes people to that person’s profile. If you shorten the username, what you are doing is notifying someone else entirely.

    I’m going to leave others to reply to your other questions.

    @vaksrealife
    Thank you for your last paragraph explaining the @ sign and how it works, which I knew nothing about. I will remember it. How people get to know these things amazes me.
    Regarding the other (finding the threads), even if I take the trouble to do all that, will everyone else who is following this thread do it?
    Supernovia started this thread so as to consolidate all the problems everyone faces about the block editor, all the feedback, into one thread, all read everyone else’s comments, instead of all being scattered over lots of threads. As there are so many, there is no need for different threads on each problem and we can all see what to beware of, what we can deal with, what staff can deal with, and what we have to put up with if we use the block editor. It is as simple as that, I am sure that musicdoc and many others will agree with me.

    Sorry, your name came out wrong with a typo. Apologies.

    By clicking around, here, there and everywhere.

    Hi @halilac,

    Regarding the other (finding the threads), even if I take the trouble to do all that, will everyone else who is following this thread do it?

    One option could be, if anyone were to create a new thread about block editor feedback or questions, to post the link to that thread on this one, in case anyone had any questions about the same feature or was able to answer it. That way if anyone read their comment they could easily find their thread.

    Also – tagging this thread with ‘mod’ is not the same as tagging it with ‘modlook’. I’m not sure who that was (or if it was in fact a member of staff) but I just wanted to point that out.

    Can someone clarify: does the problem of absence of classic editor apply only to new accounts, or also to new sites in existing old accounts?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @writer0001
    Trying to tag with modlook does not work, modlook does not appear on the list.
    Staff is already tagged, appears on the list, but has no effect in practice.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again @halilac, I think we posted at the same time.

    I’ve just created a new site using this account and changed to the Twenty Seventeen theme which @musicdoc1 said was one of the ones where the classic editor wasn’t available. I went to My Site > WP Admin > Posts > Add New and was taken automatically to the block editor. However I then went to go to edit an already-made page and the classic editor option was available.

    I hope this answers your question!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Tagging this thread with ‘staff’ is, again, not the same as tagging with ‘modlook’.
    Besides, even if you were to tag this thread with modlook, I don’t think it would make any difference.

  • Unknown's avatar

    modlook does not appear on the list

    I don’t know what ‘list’ you are referring to, but I tried tagging this thread with modlook and it worked fine. (I then deleted the tag).

  • Unknown's avatar

    This is a sticky thread. No need to tag it for staff. It is on their radar and they are no doubt sad that we won’t give the Block editor the benefit of the doubt. You can’t fight against the incoming tide. Most people of all ages seem to have mastered smartphones and TV streaming so I guess we’ll master this new editor eventually too.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I agree with you, @themagicrobot. Personally I found it relatively easy to work out, and if any of you try again in the future, I hope you have a good experience too. Hopefully by the time you’re ready to try again, the major bugs will have been sorted out, perhaps there will be new tutorials that you find more helpful than the ones that are available at the moment.

    Very good suggestion for a new block by the way!

  • does the problem of absence of classic editor apply only to new accounts, or also to new sites in existing old accounts?

    Everyone will be able to continue to use the Classic Editor, all we’re changing is the default, and @halilac it would be really great if you didn’t continue to twist our words otherwise.

    We have explained this clearly multiple times in this thread, as have numerous very helpful volunteers.

    I’m not sure why that message isn’t coming across, but again, the Classic Editor will remain for the foreseeable future.

    How to switch back to the Classic Editor is fully documented: https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor

    There is one exception, maybe that’s what you’re getting hung up on, but it is a very small exception. A handful of newer themes require the Block Editor initially. If you find yourself using one of those themes, you can either switch to a different theme or ask us to enable the Classic Editor for you.

    If you’re still having trouble finding the Classic Editor, which again will remain for the foreseeable future, please start a new thread here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

    staff-blorbo,

    As I’ve described in detail in posts #3510225, #3510589 of this topic, there appears to be another large exception that you might not be aware of.

    On my new account, created two days ago, I find that there is no access to the Classic Editor at all. @justjennifer suggests in post #3510616 on page 14 that either some or all new accounts lack default access to the Classic Editor and if they want access must ask staff to enable it. @kokkieh suggests above (#3510227) that the absence I’ve reported is due to the automatic application of a Block Editor only theme to a site on a newly created account, but my tests indicate that it’s most likely not theme dependent. On 14 different themes tested there was no access to the Classic Editor.

    I’m planning to submit a couple of posts regarding this in the volunteer blog, but I thought you might like to know that on a new account I’m certainly not obtaining the results that you’ve been guaranteeing.

  • Thanks! That’s always possible, but by no means intended.

    If you don’t mind leaving us details in a new thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1 under the affected account, or via our volunteer blog, we’d love to dig into what’s going on.
