Feedback Thread for the Block Editor

I’ve a couple of questions. I know I can ask them via chat or email (as I’ve a paid account) but maybe your answer to first one might help other users in this thread, too. You keep mentioning a ‘Volunteer blog’ and for the life of me, despite my having been using WordPress.com on and off for many years, some of them as a volunteer, I don’t know what blog you mean! Could you give a link to it, please?
The other thing is, I recently raised a support issue via email and was told that I can’t use my blog inmyrealife.wordpress.com with the Classic Editor (the original one, on wp-admin) as it’s new and wasn’t built for it. I’d seen that someone else had had staff switch their blog to it, so I asked it for mine. So – if, as you say, it can be done – if I contact someone via my account (chat or email), really, can this be done for me? I am happy to use the Block editor in my test blogs, but I’d much rather use the Classic editor in my new blog as I’m finding it really distracting. I’m currently using the Classic block and that’s okay but it still isn’t really right for me. (As feedback, one of my major issues with the whole block editor is the side panels. If their settings were all visible at the same time – as can be set via Screen Options in the Classic – that would be better but not enough is in view for me.
Thanks.

I know this is unrelated to the block editor, but, I never realised there was a ‘volunteer’s blog’ — please could someone explain what it’s for and how to get to it? Is it about how to become a volunteer for example or just general conversation about volunteering? Because I’d like to improve my volunteering and that blog might help.
(Sorry, I didn’t know if I should create a whole new thread just for this one question. I apologise for being off topic.) -

So – if, as you say, it can be done – if I contact someone via my account (chat or email), really, can this be done for me?
Yes, if you are unable to switch to the Classic Editor yourself, we can do this for you.
For that, please start a new thread here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

I found a page which suggests it deals with “volunteering”:
https://wordpress.com/blog/tag/volunteer/
…but the posts date back to 2013….

1. Thank you for answering my question about a new site.
2. You have misunderstood me about the tags. There is a slot in which you enter the tag you want and alongside it a button marked ‘add’. Above this is a list of tags already active. I wrote in ‘modlook’ and pressed add but it did not add ‘modlook’ to the list. However among the list was Staff, a tag already there! I have just put this in to explain to you, but we need not go into it further as it is off the track.
3. manmanx finally replied and accused me of twisting his words. I did not, merely quoted them and that they were contradicted by comments by others. Even this time he was again contradicted.
4. I have even now not received a staff reply to my original question which they go out of the way to avoid. Why can’t the classic editor be the default and the block editor an optional alternative, which would satisfy everyone except those wishing to force the block down our throats?
Their non-reply is itself a reply. I do not intend to continue.
Thanks again and keep going. -
@halilac, #4, I think it’s been decided now that the block editor is the default. However, if it makes any difference — I personally wouldn’t mind having to take a few extra steps to get to the block editor. As long as those ‘extra steps’ were not as complicated as getting to the classic editor appears to be for newer accounts.

@wite0001
Precisely! They have decided and are too obstinate to reconsider while there is still time.
‘Extra steps’ (plural) are not needed. It could be done in just one step. For all the commenters who hate the block, I have found a proverb which needs a minor adjustment: ‘To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a computer.’
Change it to
‘To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a block editor.’ -
@writer0001 It’s easy. If there isn’t a link at the bottom of the Block Editor’s right side panel (3 dot menu), then just open a new support forum thread and ask Staff to do it for you. I did that last night and when I woke this morning I found that my new blog (which is newer than yours) now has the Classic Editor. See here:

Sorry, your name didn’t come out right. This keeps happening to me when I write, the modern keyboards are no good. I learned to touch-type on the originals, but thses keep missing letters. Apologies -
@valsrealife, good to know! I wouldn’t mind if the classic editor was the default and all I had to do to get the block editor was ask on the forums. I can’t speak for anyone else though of course.
@ halilac, no worries :)

Why can’t the classic editor be the default and the block editor an optional alternative? Their non-reply is itself a reply.
That’s how we did it when we announced the Block Editor 2 years ago, the Classic Editor was default and you were prompted to switch to the Block Editor if you wanted to.
Now we’re changing the default to the Block Editor.

Why? When you have seen so much opposition to it in this thread alone.
Why not reconsider it? -
We’re seeing incredible adoption of the Block Editor all across WordPress.com.
Don’t get me wrong here, we do appreciate all of the feedback here and we’re using it to make the Block Editor even better, but it’s also important to keep in mind that WordPress.com has millions of active users who produce millions of new posts each month: https://wordpress.com/activity/
In comparison, we haven’t seem much call to change the default editor back to Classic.
Again though, the feedback we have received is very valuable, and we are using it to make the Block Editor better. We also have no plans to remove the Classic Editor for the foreseeable future.

Sites count the clicks – “most clicked” wins.
I think we need to be thankful that WP is prepared to keep the Classic Editor, so the least clicked, for a stretch.

I’m hating this new block editor. It’s far less user-friendly than the simple classic editor.
I have spent half an hour trying to change text format from heading to paragraph, and now I can’t find if/ how to change colour of font.
It’s just horrible! -
trying to change text format from heading to paragraph
For that, you’d change the block from a Heading Block to a Paragraph Block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/#changing-a-block-type
I can’t find if/ how to change colour of font
You’ll find Text Color under the More Options section of the Block Toolbar: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/paragraph-block/#block-toolbar

My feedback concerns the workflow and time wasters.
Hi, i tested the “new” block editor and this is my feedback and proposed solutions.
First, my normal workflow in the classic editor: I put a heading, a reference to advertising, then a “More” element, then text and pictures. Everything using the one taskbar which is very practical. the new classic bar is good too, but it could be displayed larger. Then I go into the contribution options and enter keywords and the social media texts. All without changing a lot of menus, unlike in the “new” editor.
With the block editor i started with this little conspicuousness: Drafts with the new editor have a significantly longer loading time. If I have a draft open in the tab and close the browser and reopen it, it takes longer to load than with regular drafts.
The new editor works like a smartphone solution from wordpress, which in my eyes makes absolutely no sense.
I don’t understand two things with the new editor:1] The first part is the new “+” add element button. It’s not always open as a sidebar, so it takes longer choosing elements to add and this means reducing the workflow. It costs time.
2] The other part is the extra step between “Options” and “Jetpack”. In the old version of the editor you did all functions in the options and now you need to switch to Jetpack to write the text for the connected social media part.
This also reduces the workflow and takes time.1] and 2] make no sense to me when you write on a pc or tablet.
To do:
1] Builds in an option with which you can optionally keep the “+” add element permanently open.
It would also be great to keep favorites permanently in this menu on top position.2] Jetpack and the contribution options should urgently be put back into the same menu
And maybe it is possible to display the classic taskbar in a larger style.
overall, the block system is ok, but feels bad when working on a tablet or pc. It looks like a stripped-down version for the smartphone. I will probably work more with the classic version because it just feels more compact and to the point.
Best regards

Apologies if this is on the wrong forum, but I have, over the last 18 months, been looking at using Gutenberg – near each time I bunk out as there is always something wrong with it. Currently I am using it as the theme dictates that, however, I put a row with three columns in, duplicated it for an identical row below … only to find the second row does not sit centrally like the top row. This has happened before, Why?
