Feedback Thread for the Block Editor

  • @soosmart387

I checked your site and it appears you’re in the wrong forum. Although your site is connected to WordPress.com via Jetpack, it is using the open-source WordPress.org software and you need to seek help at these forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums

These forums are for WordPress.com hosted sites only. Since we do not have access to self-hosted WordPress.org sites, we are unable to provide any direct assistance to your issue. I would also reach out to your site host for help.

If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org you can read this document:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Thanks!

    Thanks macmanx.
I did manage to work it out, but still takes me much longer to write a blog than on Classic.
I liked that you could write standard text format, but also paste code where needed using the html tab, without having to mess around moving blocks up & down when changing paragraph order.

Have now switched back to Classic. All’s well.

    Hi again,

I have some questions/feedback about the Contact Form block.

#1: A possible bug. In a checkbox group or select one block, whenever I try to edit something on one line, it always ends up adding it to another. I cannot change the title of these checkbox/select blocks anymore; it always adds whatever I write to the last option.
    For example, for this part:

I want to add a question mark to the question. (It will really annoy me if I can’t.) But whenever I try to do so, it adds the question mark after the ‘specify’ of the last option. This is REALLY IRRITATING ME. It’s been happening for months now but usually it ends up sorting itself out. Now I just can’t edit the title at all.
Also whenever I try to write a title for the first time, it adds one letter then adds to the first option. Though that’s now stopped because you have to add the first option manually, so that’s good.

#2: Placeholder text. I used to be able to add/edit this and really want to. It will help me clarify the question I’m asking without having to put it all in the box’s title. I’ve also spotted some errors/things I want to change/remove in placeholder text that I wrote before something happened which meant I can no longer edit it. I don’t know if this is a bug or something that was purposefully changed but either way I personally would like it so I can add, edit and delete placeholder text. For example:

#3: The curse of the comma. Whenever I add a comma to a checkbox or select one option, it always causes them to become two separate options, so I have to remove the comma. I don’t like that.
(For example, with the first option on https://writingareapoetry.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/unable-to-edit-title.png. ‘How to create’ will separate itself from ‘add to and edit posts’.)
I understand that it can be used as a quick way to create a new option. But some of us like our sentences to be read easily, and commas help with that.

#4: Links. Is there any way to link text in a title of a contact form block or within an option of a checkbox/select? (This question isn’t as important.)

#5: Whenever I type /text and hit enter it always adds a heading block?! Very confused about that, although again this isn’t as important because I can just select the ‘text’ option under it.

Also, generally, I agree with @familinks that the block editor takes a really long time to load. Is there any particular reason for that? Is it just that there are so many blocks?

    Thank you.

  • These sound like bugs, or maybe an interaction with a browser extension. Would you mind posting these to a new thread @writer0001 ?

We’ll take a look at these and follow up there. :)

  • Thanks! We’ll reply over there today.

  • @iqraishfaq your comment didn’t show up, possibly due to bad HTML formatting as it only said <strong>. Feel free to type plain text. And remember we’re hoping to find out:

    – What’s your typical process?

    – What is getting in the way?

    – If you could adjust one feature, what would it be?

I have another suggestion — the Latest Posts block lets you display posts oldest to newest, but the Blog Posts block doesn’t. I don’t like the Latest Posts block because the posts are listed using bullet points. Is there any way to have the option to display posts oldest to newest on the Blog Posts block? I can’t find any way, but it makes sense for the posts I’m showing to be displayed in that order.

Also in the Blog Posts block, whenever I try to write an author’s name in the Author setting of Display, it never works. It doesn’t register the author as a user so just continues showing all posts regardless of who wrote them. I’ve cleared cache etc. and tried on all available browsers. Should I create a new thread?

I am truly horrified by how poor the block editor is. I recently signed up for a WordPress.com package (I use WordPress from WordPress.org on my main site) as I thought it would be quick and easy to get something up and running.

It is truly awful and I am now desperately trying to get something that looks acceptable – and I am running out of time. Can anyone tell me what the cheapest way of using the old editor is? Do I really need to pay more than £200 a year in order to use the plugin, or is there another way?

  • Hi @cpj2020, did you try the steps listed in the initial post? If you’re having trouble with that, please send a link to the site.

Thank you Darnel, I do know the difference, was trying to get some assistance from somewhere. Thanks for the link.

  • @writer0001 thanks for this. We’ve got a GitHub issue open on that, so if you bump into it, feel free to tag “chronology” and modlook, and have us bump this thread, or, you can add a comment yourself:

    @soosmart387
Are you sure you have posted on the right link?

  • Unknown's avatar

@halilac, I think @soosmart387 was just thanking staff-doublebassd for sending them the link to the .org forums :)

    @supernovia
, do I need to create an account on GitHub to post? Is it the same as my WordPress account?
I don’t think I’ll add my comment to that particular post, as you’ve already linked to my comment on this thread. (Or was that what you meant about “bumping” the post?)

  • Unknown's avatar

@supernovia the site is mfam2020.com – although there is not much point in looking at it as I have not been able to get much there as I find the blocks impenetrable. (And what is there looks pretty bad.)

I have looked at the first post and the links in it. Classic editor does not appear as an option when I edit. I apparently cannot install any plugins unless I upgrade to “business” which costs more than £200.

  • Unknown's avatar

You do not need a plugin, just use the classical block or access your site from the administrative page.

  • Unknown's avatar

@radtrad the blocks are the problem (as I have explained: they do not work with my accessibility software. Not everyone is able to drag and drop).

I do use the admin page – not sure how else one would edit? The classic editor is not available via the admin page. I can see from the first post in this thread that one should be able to select classic editor when editing from the admin page. That option is not available to me. Hence my query…

I have sent screen shots to WordPress.com support. They acknowledge that something is wrong with my admin page and it has been forwarded on to be dealt with. I really hope it does not take long as I am working to a deadline!

  • Unknown's avatar

The classic editor is available in the adm page, unless, as I understand it, if you use one of the themes made only for Gutemberg.
