Feedback Thread for the Block Editor
-
I’ve been blogging here since 2008. The latest new editor brings back memories of when “Beep Beep Boop” was being introduced. I tried it and thought it was ghastly — so I started a new blog at another site and was in the process of transferring everything over there. Then it was announced that the “classic” editor would remain available, so I stopped my transferring efforts.
This time around you are letting us know up front that the classic editor will remain. That is very much appreciated, so your old-time bloggers don’t need to be concerned about the newest editor.

I did not read every comment on this particular forum, so perhaps the answer has been provided? I just want a step by step article/post/explanation of how to KEEP THE CLASSIC EDITOR. Telling me to go to “Admin” isn’t helpful. Where does one go after they get to their dashboard? How does one opt out of the block editor? (I’ve seen the tutorial and the preview and I know it’s not something I’m interested in using. Period.) Will the opt to use the classic editor only be available AFTER you’ve launched this new one?
Again. I’m not interested in using that block editor. I want the old classic that I’ve been using the whole time I’ve been on WordPress (since 2013). I’d make a respectful request as well. Stop messing around with stuff like block editors. There are surely more pressing things that need fixing. Please let me know. I’m due to renew my subscription on Monday and I’m having serious doubts.

I have meanwhile taken heed of the tutorial for using the new block editor… and I get the idea you first need to follow a course in handling advanced editing software, before you can even type a simple line in your humble blog.
What is this whole craze of immersing people in hard to handle stuff riddled with fancy features when some of us just want to *write*? I mean, take an ordinary book, for instance a novel…. how does it look? Simple, just pages of text, either or not with paragraphs and a new chapter on a new page and it has worked for hundreds of years and it still works….. “classic” layout. Bravo! Keep it!

Just make sure you’re in the old editor each time you create a new post. Go to WP Admin Posts -All Posts and click the arrow at the side of the “Posts Add New” button at the top left. Then you’ll see a choice of which editor to use.

I have a few minor problems with the block editor that come up occasionally (especially reusable blocks), however there is one big issue I continuously have with blocks, and that’s highlighting and removing text quickly.
For instance, I have two Paragraph blocks. One saysThis is paragraph 1.
and the other says
This is paragraph 2.
If I want to get rid of all of one paragraph and only part of the other, I cannot do this. For example, I try to highlight ‘paragraph 1. This is paragraph 2.’ but the whole of ‘This is paragraph 1.’ gets selected. I don’t like having to delete each paragraph one-by-one if I want to get rid of only some text in one of them.
There have been a few updates to blocks since I began, but I’m fairly sure I used to be able to highlight parts of different blocks at once. (I might be imagining that, though.)
Is there any way that this can be done, besides using the classic editor? Also – a minor question – a few months ago I tried using the Verse block, because I didn’t want my paragraphs to be so spaced out, but I don’t like the font that it uses. Is there any way to change this? (My theme, Stow, doesn’t allow overall font changes, I don’t think, but I was wondering if I could change it for an individual block?)

@sensuouscurmudgeon “Beep Beep Boop” — this is a chilling memory.
@embeecee Go to: WP Admin — [then] — Posts — [then] — Add New —This should lead to Classic Editor.
For me, I am trying to help a group of seniors how to use even the basic Classic Editor, but the Blocks are just beyond painful. Not entirely sure why WP does these things. For all the human ability to put people in space again, it doesn’t seem like a challenge just make blogging a simple task.

The classic block must have the justify paragraph button; shortcuts, as it currently is, is not a good thing for old users. To say that this was removed from the “Core” is not satisfactory, as I don’t see it as a big problem to add it only to WP.com.

New Editor doesn’t appear on 1th of June. Very good!!! Don’t see something useful in Block- stuff so far.

When I went to post today, I expected to have the block editor imposed on me. However, I still seem to be in classic. That is good. I do see buttons that say “try the block editor,” which I tried pretty extensively a year ago, but I am afraid to try it again because I might not be able to go back. I don’t see a choice in “admin” or anywhere else to switch editors. It looks like an unrecoverable decision, like jumping off a cliff.
My main immediate problem with the block editor is that I write offline in a text editor and paste into WordPress. If the block editor is active, it blockifies everything and I have to go and format each paragraph individually. I learned from support that it is possible to create a “classic block” and paste into that. Last time I tried that, it worked, but every time I opened the post again to edit it, it asked if I wanted to convert the classic block to a real blockified document. Very annoying.

I absolutely hate the new block WordPress editor. My comments are gone, my drafts are gone and can’t write from my site anymore, Can’t even get media or notifications it has to be strictly from dashboard which I don’t like.
How do I get the classic editor back to use it again.
If you don’t fix these glitches you might lose a lot of people including me.
When WordPress changed things they royally screwed things up. -
To get back to the Classic Editor, follow instructions from phtasmagoria in this post:

Just spent a whole day trying to use the new editor – In the end, I did use it but can’t say I’m happy with the results.
First, my theme had to be replaced – no updates!
Aaaagh!
(The ‘upload the featured image’ button wasn’t available. Took a while to discover it was a problem with the theme and then find a theme that would work and didn’t look too bad. I’m not happy with the looks – but it’s working.)I mostly post poetry this took a bit of searching to find a ‘verse’ block.
The verse block is atrocious!
Spent hours trying to find a way to adapt or configure it and gave up – it really is horrible:
1. A small letterbox textbox with a slider to show the part of the line that exceeds the width. Do people who design blocks not know that long lines in poems wrap round? Why is the block a fixed width, anyway?
2. A typewriter font!!!!!!!
Who wants their carefully crafted poem looking like an escapee from a hackathon?
Why can’t we just use the default font? This is a poem not a table there is no need for the characters in adjacent lines to line up vertically.Compare to my old workflow:
1. Choose an image and write a poem in Google docs so it can be pasted in various places.
Then
2. Click on ‘Write’ on my blog.
3. Select ‘HTML’ from the menu and paste the poem in.
4. Select ‘Video’ then ‘Media -> Add New’ upload the image.
5. Add ‘Featured Image’
6. Check it looks OK and ‘Publish’.
10 minutes work and a decent outcome – not a whole day to produce something that looks like a phishing attempt. Please don’t tell me to use the Classic Editor block
The Classic editor block does not offer the HTML option. I needed to paste into the HTML view as it did not replace “C/R” with “<p>” so allowed different line lengths and the use of the C/R to separate verses.
Having severely criticized the ‘Verse’ block – I wouldn’t mind having a go at making my own – I’ve looked at the instructions and it doesn’t seem too difficult – but will I be able to upload my block to WordPress.com?
Thanks for reading and I do hope this is helpful.

I looked at the verse block too – it looks like it was a Table of Contents block that got renamed – totally useless – see my post below.

“The Classic editor block does not offer the HTML option.”
It has this option, like all blocks, but it is elsewhere. Jus click in the “…” above the block and you will see the HTML option.

The Classic editor block does not offer the HTML option.
@postaldeliveries see here:Each block has its own block-specific controls that allow you to manipulate the block right in the editor. The classic block offers the ability to edit as HTML, duplicate, or convert to blocks

Thanks, radtrad and galois – I’ll go hunting for it and see if I can find it – as a patch – not a solution.
So far it seems that the new editor is great for website builders – but just a headache for website users.
-
It does have a ‘Code Editor’ option – but not in the block menu – in the main menu from the Hamburger icon in the top right corner of the page.
Thank you for mentioning this – it’s a pity it wasn’t called ‘HTML’ – which was what I was looking for.
But this is definitely good to know – life may not be as bad as it seemed yesterday!

Just popping in to say thank you all for the useful feedback. What I’m gathering so far is that you all mostly prefer Classic for its simplicity: no “new blocks” appearing as you write.
Question on that: if there were a way to make the new blocks less distracting, would that be helpful? So that they’re there but you just don’t see them as you go? Just hoping to make the feedback we’ll send along as useful as it can be.
@writer0001 thank you for the details on that. What you’re describing sounds like it might be a bug. Would you be willing to create a separate post here so we can troubleshoot back and forth without pinging this whole thread?

@daisymae2017, the storage for comments and drafts didn’t change with this at all, so please open a new thread on that if you need help, so we can troubleshoot.
@postaldeliveries you’ll want to note the code editor is for editing block code, which is fairly different from standard HTML. I don’t recommend it. There is an HTML block if you prefer that. -
