Feedburner version of Blog Feeds?

we don’t want to embed a monopoly to anyone. it’s fine that there’s a wp.com ‘monopoly’ on the document head (address bar). but the links in the theme should go to wherever a user wants them to.

and from a usability standpoint your really don’t want multiple links called ‘RSS’ going to different locations.

although i’m with engtech, i’d happily let them have the monopoly ;)

Noted :) however we are on a shared multi-user blogging platform and changing this footer stuff is not available to us because it would change it on every other blog, right? If so then we are blowing hot air that may confuse new bloggers who do not understand the limitation of working on a wp MU blogging platform, right? :)

Hmm, have to remember that the next time someone whines and moans (Not directed at you, Bruce. You were at least polite about it.) about how Feedburner is the second coming and how we all need it and can’t live without it.

Thanks for the clarification. I get it now, and do see the usefulness, but I know that forcing users to a particular thing such as Feedburner will cost you some readership. I wouldn’t take the chance, myself. A 30% dropoff is not uncommon when you do something like that, and I just wouldn’t do anything to cause readership to go down, even momentarily.

  • Unknown's avatar

ugh. don’t quote that, please. it’s probably the worst sentence i’ve ever written.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well spoken. I concur. As a reader of blogs I will not capitulate and subscribe to any blog where the blogger has deliberately created a “monopoly” for feedburner or any other such enterprize. I want to make my own choices thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

Sun, it’s probably not even true although I think staff may give that as a reason. How long could we only use YouTube around here? :)

    Clarification

    No, no, no…

Feedburner is NOT an RSS Reader…

Feedburner is simply a TOOL that bloggers can use to “clean up” and “fix up” and “pimp out” their RSS FEED.

It changes NOTHING for the subscriber… in the sense that it does NOT force the subscriber to use ANYTHING…

    Here’s an Idea!

I have an idea for a solution! This would NOT involve changing any themes… (Heaven Forbid!)

Why not make a change to WordPress’s Dashboard System-Wide… Add a new field under OPTIONS…. Called, “RSS Feed”. It would default to the normal WordPress RSS feed… BUT… the blogger could change it to whatever they wanted… (i.e. their Feedburner burned feed).

Then, the system would simply USE THIS FEED (the string value stored in that field) wherever the “RSS Feed” is displayed… in ALL of it’s themes!

Since we are talking about changing a SYSTEM VARIABLE, I think this should be able to be done system-wide — without actually changing any of the themes.

  • Unknown's avatar

hey man, i wholeheartedly support that idea!
    i think engtech would too.

hell, even as a paid upgrade.

  • Unknown's avatar

Bruce your idea sounds both workable and desirable. :D
Sun please … why does every improvement that’s suggested come with this “paid upgrade” trailer? Sheesh … don’t you know some of us out here truly are poor [she whined]. :P

  • Unknown's avatar

    heh, sorry.
just trying to make it something palatable to matt + co, in hopes it might be implemented sooner than later ;)

I was thinking how great it would be to have a generic “meta headers” editor window.

It would have these links as default:
    <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://engtech.wordpress.com/feed/" title="//engtech RSS 2.0 Feed" />
    <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://engtech.wordpress.com/comments/feed/" title="//engtech Comments RSS 2.0 Feed" />

But I could edit/replace them and also fill in other generic meta elements like validation for various web services to prove that you are the webmaster of a site.

Other than stripping javascript/meta redirect, not much work would need to be done.

Potential for abuse would be small, you’d see a couple of guys stuff meta description tags but that doesn’t really harm anyone and search engines ignore it.

It would be an advanced editing panel for sure (probably under Extras). People could change their default feed to FeedBurner or whatever, you’d finally be able to access the Google Webmaster console for your blog that tells you about broken links etc. You could put in non-standard meta elements like your GPS position for geoblogging.

    This would be very sweet.

I barely understand one word of that, but it sounds cool. I would support that.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Awesome!

Matt, Mark, etc… are you taking note?

    ; )

I really have enjoyed reading these threads and found myself amused. I like raincoaster am confused. After much toil, I got the social buttom and social networking thing to work last night. Thank you for all those who helped me. I have noticed my feed readers have shot up exponentially. I do not know if what is being addressed above would enhance or discourage readers to come to my blog. As I asked in the social bookmarking/networking button thread, can someone distill what is being suggested above…because my head is swimming in sequencing. Thanks for being detailed and specific. Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

Just when I was *SO* proud of myself for embedding an RSS feed button today (NOT linking! I uploaded/coded it all myself!!)

    Yet clearly, I know nussing.

But I want Feedburner now. Generic meta headers. Yeah yeah, those sound great, too. Next step is to get some really good tech writers to translate all of this for us regular humans. (hmm.. last post to this thread was over 2 months ago… tap, tap, Hello– is this thing on??)

Feel free to step up. :)

None of those features are necessary for blogging. If they are required for you, you are free to grab a copy of the wordpress software from http://wordpress.org and find yourself a host.

You are also free to submit a feedback and suggest them. Staff has said that they keep track of what’s being requested.

You may also want to read the thread that you post in as I do believe there are workaround listed up above.

I can read fairly well, thank you. It’s UNDERSTANDING what I read that is sometimes a problem! ;0)
