FeedBurner Widget on a WordPress.com Blog
-
I have seen some discussion about FeedBurner on the forums, but I am not sure what the current situation is.
Can I put a widget on a wordpress.com like that which is in the upper right corner of the following blog:
http://www.scotthanselman.com/
Thanks.

Thanks.
So I would just go to FeedBurner.com, follow the steps and put that in a text widget?
And, by the way, what is the *downside* to using FeedBurner?
Thanks.

Yep, that’s it.
As far as a downside, if your blog is already pretty well-established i wouldn’t ask readers to switch to a new feed. I think it’s too much trouble to ask someone to do. If you haven’t been blogging long, then i’m not sure there is a downside (except if you use a theme with a feed button hardcoded into it, such as Misty Look, i don’t think that button can be mapped to the Feedburner feed).
You’re welcome :-)

Hi There: I’m new to this whole thing. Is there anyplace to get detailed information on how to execute the above? I’ve been trying to figure out how to get feedburn on my blog…

@ gyozamonsta
Follow the instructions in the posts above yours. You cannot upload the feedburner widget, but you can put the link into a text widget. That is the only way at this time.If you are new to writing links, these FAQ’s should help:

wow. that was fast. thank you so much.
I also found this, but now need to figure out how to add a little button to it.

Thanks again!

There are illustrated instructions in the FAQs on this http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/

@gyozamonsta – If you go to your FeedBurner account, to the Publicize tab, you can select chiclets (little buttons) for various services. It’ll provide the code for you to use in your text widget.
You can also use the RSS button from Add This (http//addthis.com) with your FB account, as long as you know your feed name.
I use a few chiclets for the more popular services and use AddThis to cover the rest.

Thanks so much for that thesacredpath and timethief. I actually did search the faq and support options and didn’t come up with any of this?!
This is another (probably very basic) question–Thesacredpath provided links to badges and buttons. How can I offer subscriptions using a button? I’ve tried following the directions in the faq and can’t seem to get anything to show up…
-
Thanks ellaella. I’ll try that again. nothing showed up the first few times I tried pasting the code into the text widget.

You will use what’s called an image link:
<a href="http://pagelinkhere"><img src="http://imagelinkhere" alt="" title="" /> </a>A typical feedburner code for email update would look like this:
<a href="http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=yourfeedidnumber;loc=en_US">Subscribe to yourblogname</a>You would edit that code and make it like this:
href="http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=yourfeedidnumber;loc=en_US"><img src="http://imagelinkhere" alt="" title="" />Replace the image link URL with the URL of the button you want to use.

Thanks thesacredpath. I used this:
<img src=”http://gyozamonsta.wordpress.com/files/2007/12/feedburner_copy1.png” alt=”” />
and left the result up on the pages http://www.gyozamonsta.wordpress.com. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.
thanks for your help!

Sorry, the code pasted incorrectly it’s actually:
<a href="http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=1469955&loc=en_US"><img src="http://gyozamonsta.wordpress.com/files/2007/12/feedburner_copy1.png" alt="" /></a> -

I took out the extra set of quotation marks. I put this image up on my test blog and it works just fine. So, there’s your solution. :)
-
Hi timethief just tried it (removing the extra set of “) and the image comes up but in the middle of the rest of the code. I’ll keep fiddling around with it…
thanks!
-
Hmmmm I don’t know why that would happen on your blog but not on my test blog.
You’re welcome. -
ok…so you’re saying (without the additional quotes after alt=
<a href="http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/emailverifySubmit?feedId=1469955&loc=en_US"><img src="http://gyozamonsta.wordpress.com/files/2007/12/feedburner_copy1.png" alt=" /></a>shows up as a clickable bage from feedburner?
grrr…i can’t figure out what i’m doing wrong.
