  I thought one could have a WordPress site for free…I can’t get past selecting a paid plan to play around with a potential site.

  Free sites are available as long as you accept a subdomain ending in .wordpress.com or .blog. If you select a custom domain address then a paid plan is required.

  I’m in the same boat and whenever I select .blog (or any other option), I’m still asked to pay.
