Few basics about WP

Hi all ! I have started a personal blog with WP. I am new to it ! Please answer my queries…
-What all basics things i should know [if any, which are not related to posting & other tech stuff]
-Please suggest me the common widgets/tools/plugins which you use in your blogs.
eg. Like tools which enables facebook/twitter with wordpress etc or plugin which makes image to float on screen when clicked.
-Suggest me some themes. My blog will be about my personal life [& i have zero interest in earning money through it], so i prefer simple themes. Menu based theme will be good.
-In the homepage, it displays full content of the post. I want to show just first few lines of post. How to make it ? Does this option theme dependent ?Thanks in advance :)
