Few Newbie Questions
-
Hi all,
I’m new to this and need to start posting tomorrow, but need to set certain things in place first.
1. The blog will have 4 different authors. Is it possible for each of them to have different avatars and ‘About Me’ profiles – perhaps if you click on the avatars?
2. Will each author have to have a different user name and password, or can they all have the same uniform username and password that the blog has now? (Security is not an issue with this blog)
3. I want the URL to read: http://www.tempestra.co.uk/blog. Is this possible? I don’t mind paying for this.
4. In the near future, I will be transferring the blog unto .org – hosting it myself. At that time, the blog will be re-designed to look like the existing website. I want to be sure that I will keep all the existing content – including avatars etc?
5. Is there a theme on .com at the moment that looks something like…’Excuse us, we’re just getting changed at the moment…’ or something like that? The site will talk mostly about lingerie so I wanted something a bit cheeky. Or can I add imagery etc to the top banner to this effect? Also, can I add the shop logo to the theme/site?
6. Just to be sure, I want to integrate the site with Facebook and Twitter so that comments on these sites would show up on the blog etc. I think I may have done this in the widget part, but could anyone confirm this for me?
Please with all help, step by step responses would be most appreciated. I wasn’t joking about the newbie bit!
Many thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
1) yes each author can have their own ID etc as long as they are different users.
2) best to have each author as a separate user – makes sorting things much easier
3) you can do blog.tempestra.co.uk but not tempestra.co.uk/blog – limits on how the internet and WordPress.COM works
4) all content can be moved – export from here and import to new site – Avatars are based on the email address so they are independent of the blog I think –
5) depending on the theme you can have a header picture
6) Facebook and Twitter work here – some limits but others can explain them better.
PS – you do need also to meet all the terms of service so you should read them closely up front.

Hello there,
WordPress.com is a hosted blog service. You do not have to download software, pay for hosting or manage a web server. WordPress.com does not permit uploading themes or plugins. WordPress.org is free software. You can install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database. WordPress.com vs. WordPress.orgRe: ToS issues
I recommend that you read all of these.

Apologies for the sluggishness – I really have no idea!
1. Authors – What if the all 4 authors were working from the same email address etc? How do I go about adding authors anyway?
2. How do I change the URL to blog.tempestra.co.uk as you have mentioned is possible?
3. I’ll have a search round for a theme that will let me use a header that I can customise.
4. You wouldn’t happen to know where I could find the T&Cs for Twitter and Facebook, do you?
Thanks

1) Your email address is the master identifier here – one person / account per email address. See one of the links @timethief gave you to add authors
2) It’s a paid upgrade $ 12- / year – – http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

1. (a) They must have different email addresses as the username account email address is the unique identifier here.
1. (b) adding users and user roles
2. domain mapping
map to existing domain3. There are over 140 themes and most
do have custom headers.4. What are “T&Cs”? I don’t know what you mean.

Hi Timethief,
Thanks for responding – I know you’re busy.
Okay, I read the TOS for WP. You scared me – I thought I was doing something wrong and that’s why you directed me there! I will not be advertising or spamming or teaching people to get rich quick. It will be a lifestyle blog linked to my lingerie retail site.
The point that I did not want to state on here is that although the blog will be purely mine, there will be four ‘characters/avatars’ writing variously on various topical issues. So today, Character A might state their view on…short skirts, and tomorrow, Character B may comment on…if she thinks burlesque is making a come-back. These characters are not necessarily real :-)
I’ve found the authors widget in my back office (read up one of your posts – thanks!), but it seems to be only letting me add the one author.
I checked on here: http://engtech.wordpress.com/tools/wordpress/wordpress-theme-reviews/, but there was no category for Display Authors. I think this blog author has changed the categories of the theme reviews.
By T&Cs, I meant Terms and Conditions. The first response (auxclass) suggested that I needed to meet all the ToS of service – I thought he was referring to ToS of using the Twitter and Facebook widgets. That I needed to do certain things before I could apply them to my blog. I now understand that he meant ToS of WP as a whole. I’ve read up on them.
Reading further on your blog – really informative, someone mentioned that transferring on to .org can be quite overwhelming and really techy. I’m not really techy, but I really do want the blog to ultimately look like my site. Is there absolutely no other way to do this other than to go unto .org?
Thanks

Also, to make our blogs better – Is there a place for bloggers to get free (royalty free, like don’t sue me) type photos?
