  I have selected one of the packages that mentions its free for the first year and the second year is $48. when will be charged the $48?
  What happens if i cancel after a few months? will i still be charged the $48?

  To clarify: the package isn’t free for the first year, only the custom domain is.
  You have to pay the moment you order the wordpress plan.
