File Download Button (Plugin)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there. Yesterday I started up my own wordpress site called ‘Loose Trace’. Here I’m hoping to upload my own hand drawings specifically so others can download and use them for artistic & conceptual visualisations in the architecture & design industries.

    Is there a way I can add a ‘download’ button to the files I will be uploading? I have found a plugin that will do that but I realise now that because I have hosted with WordPress I cannot customise my plugins…

    If there is no way for me to enable the above function/plugin, is there a way for me to migrate my wordpress to another host that allows plugin customisation?

    Many thanks.

    Hi there!

    Is there a way I can add a ‘download’ button to the files I will be uploading?

    Although there isn’t a builtin way for creating a download button on WordPress.com, it is possible to achieve with a few steps that I’ve outlined here for you:

    1. Firstly, search for or create a download button. If you’re comfortable creating images on your computer, you may like to make your own button to fit in with the style of your site, or, alternatively, you could search for free images on the web:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/finding-free-images-and-other-media/

    2. Once you have your download button, follow our steps for uploading it to a post/page and linking it to the URL for one of your hand drawings:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/links/image-links/

    3. Finally, now you’ve created the download button, switch to the ‘Text/HTML’ tab at the top right of your editor. This can be found next to the ‘Visual’ tab. Then add the download attribute inside the link to your hand drawing. I’ve created the following example of how this would look for you:

    <a href="example_link_to_image.jpg" download>
      <img src="example_download_button.jpg"/>
    </a>

    Save your changes and, if you view the changes, you’ll see the image file is automatically downloaded to your computer when clicked upon.

    Let me know if any of those steps need any clarification.

    If there is no way for me to enable the above function/plugin, is there a way for me to migrate my wordpress to another host that allows plugin customisation?

    Absolutely. We have a step-by-step guide for moving to self-hosted installation of WordPress available here:

    If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to help out.
