File not deleted from cache

  • Unknown's avatar

This file was deleted on 30th April 2019 but still appears to be available and appears in search results https://londonwerewolves.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/2012-hockey-tournament.pdf
I understand that there is a delay to deletion due to the cache but others we deleted at the same time have gone.
This has been deleted due to a request which we have to legally comply with and it’s causing some distress that this is still searchable and accessible.
What is the process to get this permanently removed?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I get a “404-Not Found” page when I click on that link, so it looks like it has gone.

As far as being searchable, it will take some time before search engines recrawl and reindex your site, and WordPressdotcom has no control over that process. You’ll need to approach each search engine to have it removed from their search results.

Still there for me and I’ve tried different browsers and private browsing with the same effect. It opens the PDF. It’s the only one out of all the content I deleted that still exists. Still showing in search results as well so Google, Bing etc are still able to crawl it. All other content I deleted has now gone from WordPress and also from search engines so it’s just this content.

Hello again, I still see a 404 for that file. Try restarting your router.

As I said above, you’ll need to approach search engines to remove the content if you don’t want to wait for them to reindex your site.

This is STILL an issue. The file is definitely not deleted from the WordPress cache serving my region (UK). I’ve still access here and via my work network which routes through the Netherlands. My assumption is you have it cached in locations all over the globe and it’s just removed from the cache server in your location that you are directed to which is why you get the 404 and I (and others here) don’t.
I need the process to get this removed and flushed from all the WordPress cache servers so that it’s no longer accessible and crawl-able by search engines. As I said this has come from a formal request and we need to take action on it asap.

I’ve gone ahead and tagged this thread for Staff attention to confirm or address deletion of the file you indicated from your site, which I still see as a 404. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Regardless, you’ll need to use the form at each search engine to request this file be removed from their caches. WordPressdotcom cannot do this for you.

Thanks, no problem dealing with the search engines directly and cleaning up there once the file is removed.

  • Howdy –

I am not on the same continent as justjennifer and can confirm that I also see a 404 error when using that file link. See here.

werewolvesoflondon.org.uk is alive and well. It is connected to the free site,
londonwerewolves.wordpress.com – which is also alive and well. It has not been deleted.

Please confirm if you are trying to delete the entire site, and address(es) or if you just needed to delete the file (which has been successful). If the file link is still working on your end it is likely just in the browser cache. Clear your browser cache to see if that will produce the same 404 error we are seeing.

Hi, Are you in UK or Europe?
I’m not looking to delete the site. We are a non-profit org and love using WordPress to host our site.

We have a request to remove images and files which relate to an individual who was part of our club. This is due to circumstances outside our club. As part of our legal obligation, we complied with this at the end of April by removing these with the view that it would be removed from WordPress and no longer be able to be crawled by search engines. These would then eventually not hold references or images relating to them.

All of the other content deleted has been removed perfectly and is no longer accessible or appears in search results.
It is just this one file which was deleted on 30th April but is still accessible to me and other parties in the UK across different PC’s and browsers. Search engines also still hold a reference to it.
I have also been able to access this PDF file when connected to the internet in Netherlands so it doesn’t seem specific to just UK.

I’ve tried different browsers, private browsers, different PC’s/Tablets/Phones (including ones it’s never been opened on) and different locations and it’s still available to me.

I can see that file via three different browsers here in the UK.

Just chipping in hoping to be helpful: I am in Italy and I get a 404 error when clicking on the PDF link- tried three different browsers, all gave me a 404 error

  • Unknown's avatar

I am in the UK and it’s not deleted for me, I can access it.

Thanks @themagicrobot and @lupuslapis for confirming you can access the file from the UK and to @airalis93 for confirming they cannot.

  • Hey there,

Hmmm…I see a 404 file on file as well, but I went ahead and purged the cached image on this end just to see if that does the trick. People in the UK (and elsewhere), let me know if you all still see the file.

    Thanks!

    staff-doublebassd. Yes, I now get:

    404 — File not found.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes that looks like it’s done the trick. Thanks for the support.

Glad to know it’s gone for you now as well.
