final version of first blog post didn’t save

I was working on the my first blog post before launching my website. This was in intervals. I started writing in the morning and gradually finished throughout the day into the night. I had the same page open the whole time. I was a bit concerned, because the options to save my draft/publish it were either grayed out or not available. They were there at first, but then they weren’t when I checked again. I didn’t preview before publishing which I probably should’ve. Since there wasn’t a publish button, I hit launch instead which made my website public and also posted the final draft. I’m guessing there was some sort of override with doing these two things at once, because the post itself autosaved what I was working on hours before but not my final 1000+ words. I switched my public post back to a draft, because there was a ton of information missing.

I feel a bit frustrated, because I thought pretty carefully about my post, and it isn’t like I can just pull those words out of my brain again. Is there anyway I can restore what I actually wanted to publish without having to re-write everything?

  • Oof, I’m sorry to hear that. If the buttons were greyed out for saving, my guess is that the connection was lost, which would make sense if you had the same editor window opened for many hours.

And the launch button is separate from that.

You can try using your back button to see if your words are still there in browser storage. Next time though, if you see the save button is greyed out, I highly recommend copying everything to your clipboard before navigating away from the page.

If you’ll let us know the page or post name, we can look to to see there’s anything more in revisions, too, or you can do that on your end:
