Find a Theme

I have seen Themes on the Theme Directory but they are not coming up when I try to choose a Theme. What can be the reason?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there –

Your WordPress.com site can use any of the themes from our Theme Showcase at https://wordpress.com/themes/ Is this where you have been looking?

Following your link I only see one theme with Business in the title -ie: Business Identity. Going in on Themes from the website I see a few more than that. When i go direct to the Themes Directory & filter on Business there are more than 14 themes with Business in the title (stopped counting) but these have not shown up using the methods above.
Puzzle? The Themes directory seems to be displaying far more themes than the other methods

  • When you go to wordpress.com/themes/ and click “…More” then under “Types” click “Business” and you should see this list of themes: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/business/

Thank you for your reply Liz. I followed the link you suggested, but, as I said before, only 1 theme comes up with business in the title. I am not hung up about having business in the title but it simplifies my search as there are so many. When I go onto Manual – Easy WPGuideWP4.7 and page 102 it gives me a link to Theme Directory. I filter on business & get loads of themes with business in the title. That is why I am puzzled

That is the process for self hosted WordPress sites. Here at WordPress.com you will go to https://wordpress.com/themes/ to choose a theme for your site.

Many thanks, again, Liz. Am starting to understand. It is a great shame that I cannot practice with the whole range first, as so far, I have not found a theme to suit me. I want a Home page with 6 sub pages which I have not found yet how to achieve. Not interested in blogs, but am in Contact. Also, not found how to achieve this with a menu

  • When you are looking at themes it is important to remember that you are going to completely customize the theme with your own text and images. My suggestion is to focus on features rather than the content being displayed.

Every theme has a menu that you can customize.

Let me know what features you need in your theme and I will provide some suggestions. Or if you can link me to a website that you are fond of I can take a look at that as well.

Hi Liz,Many thanks for your patience. I have now had another go and progressed!!! Yipee!
I have created a site with 8 subpages (no content) & can navigate them. I now want to add a plugin to just one of the pages and am stuck. I click on Plugins & get a list of plugins which (I think) are already included but I cannot see how to add a new one. I did try a search but that wasn’t successful either. I was going to add any old plugin for this exercise. When i start for real I will be on a paying situation.
    My site is earlypaws1blog.wordpress.com
    Cheers

  • Good Morning –

It sounds like there is still some confusion regarding the differences in WordPress.com and self hosted WordPress sites.

With a self hosted site, that uses the installation of WordPress you have the option to use Plugins on your site.

This guide explains the differences between WordPress.com (here) and self hosted WordPress: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

With WordPress.com hosting (here) you aren’t able to add custom Plugins.

That said, we do support functionality for what many Plugins accomplish. Can you let me know what ones you were interested in?

Hi Liz,Many thanks for your reply
Since I wrote I have now done more research & realised I will have to go to .org for the plugin I want.
I will require an Appointments (by the hour) with fixed payments by credit card plugin. I realise there are quite a number on the market & will have to make a decision. There are 2 areas where I am not sure –
    1. The Contact page – can I have several Contact pages going to different people & called from different pages?
    2. My website would have probably 8 pages below the Home but only one would want to call the plugin.
I do not see how the call is initiated – would it be a button?
    Regards
    Bryan

  • My suggestion is to take a look at the Getting Started materials listed to the left of https://wordpress.org/support/ That information is going to help give you an idea of how to get started. There is going to be a bigger learning curve than what happens with WordPress.com (here) as we take care of a lot of the behind the scenes details that you’ll be responsible for with a self hosted site.

Any WordPress.org specific questions need to be asked at https://wordpress.org/support/

You’ll see the plugins tab up top at https://wordpress.org/

The step-by-step instructions to transition from WordPress.com to self hosted WordPress are at move.wordpress.com.

If you want to stick with WordPress.com we can set up a PayPal button to collect payments: https://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/view-all/ This button can be added to any page, post, or as a widget in the sidebar of a page.

The contact form parameters can be edited so that the information is delivered to different email addresses.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/forms/contact-form/

There is also a contact information or chat widget that you could add to the site:

    Tlk.io Widget
