Find titles and "visibility" on widget page in theme Twenty Eleven
-
I use the Twenty Eleven theme for two blogs. This week, there are big changes to the widgets page. All my widgets have lost their titles so my widgets page has three dozen widgets that are either “Text” or “Image” and I can’t tell one from another without opening them all up. How do I get the titles back? Secondly, there is no “visibility” option on each one. How do I manage where each appears?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
I just took a look at your widgets and they all appear to be working fine for me using Safari on my Mac (which appears to be what you’re writing in from). I even took a screenshot to show you what I’m seeing:
Are you still having the same issues, or was it on a different site that you were having these problems? Let me know!
-
Hmmmm, yes I am using Safari on a Mac with Mavericks OS. But I don’t see titles or visibility in the widgets, and it’s been that way for a couple of days. I’m not having this trouble with the other sites I administer (and they do have different themes).
I am sending this message but will now look at your screen shot.
-
Your screen shot shows the items I can’t see. I don’t know why you can see these items and I can’t! I need to edit them! Any ideas of what I can do?
-
Did you recently install any sort of add-on or extension to your Safari or to your mac in general which may be interfering with the widgets page? Also, when was the last time you restarted your computer? If it wasn’t recently (within the last 24 hours or so), please give it a reboot and see if that clears it up.
If you haven’t installed anything and your reboot doesn’t fix it, could you please try a different browser to see if it isn’t working there too? If you don’t have one you can download one here:
Thanks so much!
-
Ok, good ideas. I will reboot. And I can try firefox. Duuhhhh, always reboot when in doubt. But it does help to know that you can see the items that I can’t see. I’ll try these and let you know.

Firefox didn’t work on my laptop nor did rebooting. Also, my laptop does work for my other sites. It’s just the one site that messes up. I hadn’t downloaded any thing new so I don’t know what causes this. However, I tried my other computer today, and it did work there. So at least I can get work done! Thanks for your ideas.
-
Thanks for checking that out! I’m so glad you’re able to get work done at least! Let’s see if we can get this working correctly for you.
It sounds like you may have installed something on your computer that’s blocking these items from displaying. Can you check and see if you have any extensions installed in Safari? You can see this by opening your Preferences and navigating to the ‘Extensions’ pane.
Let me know if you see something there!
-
I checked Safari > Extensions and there was nothing there in the window. I tried “Get Extensions” and nothing appeared. I am now remembering that I recently downloaded a new version of Flash. Could that have caused my problem? Thanks for continuing to help me with this. Susan

I don’t think updating Flash should have done this, as long as the installation was successful and showed no errors.
When you viewing your widgets, can you open your browser’s console? Here’s how you do that in Safari:
- First we’ll need to enable the Develop menu. So opening your Preferences pane and move to the Advanced tab.
- At the bottom, you’ll see a checkbox for “Show Develop menu in menu bar”. Check this box and close your preferences.
- Open you widgets page:
- While viewing this page, open the Develop menu in the menu bar. Select the fourth option down “Show Error Console”
Let me know if you see anything red there. It’s normal for there to be a few alerts (yellow icons), for your purposes, we’re only concerned about the actual errors, which will be red.
-
Ok, I did this and it appears to have opened the console. There is nothing in red under “console” or “error”. However in black it does say, “Unexpected CSS token” several times. The bad news is that now my desktop Mac mini is also unable to access the widgets so I can't make any corrections on my websites. Now the problem is much more serious! I hope you can keep helping me and we can figure this out. Susan
-
Thanks for checking that! The CSS token warnings are normal. Nothing to worry about.
Since this just recently changed on your Mac Mini, did you update any software there recently? Like upgrading to Yosemite? Or install any new plugins for your browser? I’m still not seeing an issue on my end, and I recently updated Flash as well.

Well, I did install Mavericks in my laptop recently, but I think WordPress was working ok with it afterwards and this change is sudden and more recent. Also odd is that my desk computer at first didn’t have the problem, but now does. They both work off my local network, a home connection through a lyncsys device. Let me know if you have other suspicions. My consultant may make it over to take a look tomorrow morning, but if not, it will be a week (groan). I’ll let you know if I have any breakthrough (fyi) if you let me know if you have more ideas. Susan

I just want to make sure, because I’m not seeing in this thread. Have you tried clearing your cache and cookies? Here’s a guide for doing that:
It would also be helpful to know if you see this problem on your computer when you on a different network, like at a local coffee shop or library.
-
Ok, I’ll try the cache cleaning as I haven’t done that yet. I haven’t been to another network for the past few weeks. The cookies is a likely answer because that could have been messed up on my desktop computer as well as my laptop. I’ll let you know what happens. Susan

Removing the WP cookies from the website and then opening wp did not solve the problem. I also didn’t mention that I often get a message saying that my internet connectivity keeps getting interrupted. Usually I just remove the message and my connectivity is there, though often very slow. When too slow, or not happening, I reconnect my network. Could this be a hint as to what I can fix for both?
-
With that information, it does sound like this is maybe a connection issue. Would you be able to take your laptop to a cafe or library and see if this still happens?
-
Yes, I'm taking it over to my son's house late this afternoon. I can let you know what happened tomorrow.
-
Thanks so much for doing that! Let me know what you find, then I can narrow our troubleshooting focus and hopefully get this sorted out. :)
