Finding a theme like Spun

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I set my site up using Spun (which isn’t supported any longer) years back because I loved the look. I bodged it using posts as pages (ie I did a set of posts and left it at that).

Now I need to redo it – I’ve two blogs elsewhere that are closing so I need a theme that allows static pages and a blog. But I’d also really like to keep something of that Spun look (the graphic circles etc. or just not squares and rectangles.) Unless I’ve misunderstood and this is still doable in Spun?

I realise I could in principle do this in many themes if I was able to dig into the CSS etc but that’s beyond my technical capabilities.

Any suggestions for a similar theme that handles blog posts and static pages simultaneously? Doesn’t even have to be with graphic circles, just not endless squares and rectangles…

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Hi Laurence!

I see what you mean, the circles are original! Technically all themes can support static pages as well as blog posts – the main thing you’d need to decide is whether you want your blog posts to be the first thing people see when they get to your site, or whether you want them to see a static front page:

    Front Page

That means you could go ahead and create pages in the Pages section of your site; you’d normally need to set up a menu and add the pages, to ensure that visitors can find them:

I do see you have an “About” page already:

If you’re not having any problems with Spun at the moment, I’m sure you could keep it a little longer.

If you do wish to change to a newer theme, admittedly most of the theme default demos tend to be fairly ‘rectangular’, but the themes we have currently listed as ‘recommended’ themes all work with the Site Editor. They’re quite simple but they are a lot more flexible than older themes and you can dive in to edit the templates as you prefer, without coding. The Site Editor looks a lot like the page/post editor, but it’s for the overall look/template of the site.

Although angular, here are a couple of themes which are compatible with the Site Editor:

    Hi 95percentghost!

That’s really helpful. So if I wanted a static front page which was actually a set of circular images each linking to a different page, what I need to do is first find a theme that supports a static front page like that and then use the Site Editor to tweak the look of the links?

    Thanks again,

    Laurence

  • Hello Laurence,

    Yes that’s correct.

Most themes do support a static front page. :)
