Finding an older version of an unpublished blog post

Finding an older version of a blog post.
There is a blog post which I have been editing on for a few days (never published) and suddenly it went back to an older version. I of course tried to “undo” but there was absolutely no change in the text. I can see no other versions to look for other than the one I’m stuck with. The version that I’m stuck with now is the one I had from the very start from Autosave No 1. Despite that it has been autosaved numerous times since then, this past week.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New
The auto-save works there and the post will be Standard post format unless you change it.

Do not create posts here > http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ where the auto-save is not working and where you are creating an Aside post format.

If and only if a missing post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New then you can recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be. See here > http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/03/21/wordpress-recovering-a-lost-blog-post-or-page/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

But if it was created here http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ there is no means of recovery as the auto-save is not functioning there.

    Thanks
I have been writing on my post in the correct place and auto-save has been in work during the time. I’ve also managed to find old drafts through auto-save before, but THIS time it seems like I lost all my work because now I’m stuck with the very first version of the post. Auto-save must have been saving my posts numerous times since that first draft-version, but I still lost my work. WordPress did tell me that there was an older version of the post, and would I like to go back to it – and I ticked YES. The post doesn’t change one bit. I also tried “undo”, but to no avail.

My guess is that I’ve accidentally (when folding my lap top together) must have pressed certain keys since all my work is gone.

I wish there was a date which I could return to, in order to find the latest version.

    Thanks anyway, God bless

    Hi there,

If there is no revision history for your post, it sounds like the autosave may not have been triggered. Looking at your most recent draft post, I didn’t see any revision history until I examined the post. Unfortunately that means there is no older version to recreate.

I’ll keep looking into this issue. In the meantime, I’d recommend doing manual saves periodically if you are writing a longer post so that you know that there’s a saved version.

I think that a manual save needs to be done to make sure the Auto-Save starts saving – I also do a Save Draft as the last thing when I leave an Edit Post / Page screen. And as @jackiedana do a manual save often – I almost never go more than a few minutes without doing a manual save – I trust no system

Thanks for the info. I suppose the auto-save has made me so secure that I ended up not doing any manual savings any more. And the post I’m talking about (about “almah”) was edited many times during several days. I would probably be pleased if I could find the version from 24-25 June, instead of 26 June which I presently have (and which looks like it did when I just started on the post). Unfortunately I’ve spent hours on this particular post due to research, translation, etc.

    I’ve learned my lesson…

PS – the other option is to use an editor like Windows Live Writer (free) and create the Post on your PC then upload it to your blog for final editing.

Another option is to use a regular Word Processing or Text editor and then paste the text into your Post – but be sure you Paste in as plain text or a Word document (boxes on the 2nd row of the editor bar – if you just paste the text in from a Word Processing program you will get a lot of junk formatting stuff that will make the Post and maybe your entire page look really really bad – this option does require the Media (pictures) to be added after the past into the WordPress editor
