Hi,
You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain. Each plan comes with a free domain credit you can use to either register a new domain or map one you already own.
Additionally following article help you guide with the mapping of your registered domain to your site:

Hi there!
If you want to use your own domain name with your WordPress.com blog you’ll need to connect it from your domain dashboard. You can check this full tutorial if your not sure.
They way in which you’re trying to connect your domain for what you’ve said until now seems to not be the recommended one.
Try following the steps stated in the above guide.
Let us know if you need further assistance.

I’m not sure about that, maybe Sunil can give you some insight.
My gess is that WordPress.com web servers are simply not configured to work that way.
Remember they are not a hosting platform, they ar an all-in-one solution same as Blogger or WIX.

Hi,
But why won’t you allow me to point to my current website’s IP address?
As I can see from the address of your site which is sosketchy908751980.wordpress.com that you are using a WordPress.com Free Plan.
Your site address will use a WordPress.com subdomain (sitename.wordpress.com) if you are on a Free Plan.
To be able to use a custom domain you will need to upgrade to at least a WordPress.com Personal Plan.

Hope this helps

Hi allkokeredup,
But why won’t you allow me to point to my current website’s IP address?
WordPress.com isn’t designed to work with domains in this way. Just pointing the domain to us won’t create a connection between the custom domain and sosketchy908751980.wordpress.com, so visitors will still see the free address in their browser’s address bar.
If you want the site to load at the custom domain, you will need to use domain mapping:

Please let me know if you have any questions.
@sevenokk and @mrsnlchauhan — thanks for your help!
