Finding the right theme

  I’m looking for a clean, minimal theme that will be able to support an ajax menu on the side (ie. Search the catalogue by -colour -size) and stay there as the rest of the page refreshes or loads
  (is ‘ajax’ the right term for this need? is it a different term I’m looking for?)

  Ajax is one of the ways something like that can be built, yes.

  The kind of menu you’ve described isn’t something that is going to work on your current WordPress.com site, but you would likely be able to find something more in line with your goals on a different kind of WordPress site, called self hosting.

  There may be third party themes or plugins that you could install on a self hosted site to create that kind of menu.
