Finding the right theme for a two-topic site

I’m brand new to word press and trying to build a website for myself. I already had one built before using iWeb but want to built a more formal looking site. I’m a lighting designer that recently began working in digital lighting. I want to build a site that covers both my theatrical work and my digital. My needs are these:

    1) A welcome page that lets the user branch off into either ‘Theatrical Design’ or ‘Digital Design’
    2) From there, a home page for each and sub pages that can host photo albums or videos depending on the content.

I already host my current site through bluehost but just need wordpress to build a better site to host.

Please help! I’m overwhelmed by the options and don’t really know what to search for.

  • Hi ktbrosz – welcome to WordPress!

Since you already have a site with Bluehost, are you looking to install WordPress there and build a self-hosted site?

If so, you’ll have a wide variety of free themes to choose from here:

    https://wordpress.org/themes/

You can search the directory with different criteria.

You’ve found yourself in the WordPress.com forums, which are for folks who want to build and host a site here at WordPress.com. You may not know about the differences between the two types of WordPress sites, but there’s a handy comparison here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If you decide to make a site here on WordPress.com, you’ll be able to choose from the 300+ free and premium themes we offer:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/

I’d be glad to help you narrow down your theme selection if you are going to stay here at WordPress.com.

If you decide to stay self-hosted at Bluehost, you can always ask for theme suggestions over at WordPress.org, in the themes forum:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forum/themes-and-templates

You’ll need a free WordPress.org account to post – if you don’t already have one, you can register here:

    https://wordpress.org/support/register.php

I know it can be a little confusing, but the WordPress community – both here at WordPress.com and the self-hosted world – is super helpful and I’m sure we’ll be able to help you find a good theme that meets your needs.

I think I’m going to switch over to wordPress.com and get some sort of business site here. Seems wildly easier for a new web page builder like myself.

I’d love suggestions on themes. I’ve been looking at paid options too on themeforest and their word press sites. I guess I don’t really know what to search for is the main problem!

I’d like my portfolio to be broken up into multiple galleries, (Dance, Theatre, Events) and then a video page for my Visual FX reel. Is there a term for that that I should be keeping an eye out for? I’ll keep hunting myself.

  • I would probably focus on the term “portfolio” since we have themes specifically designed to showcase work in portfolios.

Here are all our free portfolio themes:
    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/portfolio/type/free/

    Some popular ones are:

    Sketch
    https://sketchdemo.wordpress.com/

    Espied
    https://espieddemo.wordpress.com/

    Illustratr
    https://illustratrdemo.wordpress.com/

    Premium portfolio themes:

With portfolios on WordPress.com you can use the portfolio shortcode to display portfolio projects on any page or post, which gives you infinite possibilities for setting up your site. You can read more about portfolios here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/

You can also use image galleries within the site to further show off your work:

Hope this helps you get started!
