Hi there,
I’m not really familiar with the button which you’re referencing, but usually when something like this happens it is because the code which you’ve been supplied is using a code type which we do not allow in our system for security reasons.
Here is a list of the codes which we do and do not allow:
If you’d like, you can paste the code in your response and I’ll take a look at it to be sure that is the issue!

thanks. I am a longtime graphic designer and artist, but I did it for print. Code makes me itch :-)
here's the code. btw, on an iPad

I completely understand. Everyone has something that makes them itch! ;)
And unfortunately it is exactly what I said earlier. This code requires iframes in order to work correctly, which do not work in our system. You can either go to fineartamerica and see if they have a strict HTML version of their button which you can use (some companies like Paypal do), or if you really need this button to work you can consider going with a self-hosted version of WordPress.org rather than WordPress.com. Here’s some additional information on the differences between the two:
Let me know if you have any questions!

I’m sorry, I don’t understand. They have the WordPress logo on their site? That is quite common. Or some other logo?

That is entirely possible. As I mentioned, the fineartamerica folks might have a different variation of their button which does not require iframes and which would work in our system. Also keep in mind that there are two varieties of WordPress. There is WordPress.com (which is the free managed hosting which you currently have), and there is WordPress.org, which is a set of software which you can download and install yourself on any hosting account. WordPress.org sites do not have the exact same restrictions that WordPress.com sites do, so it’s possible that your friend’s site has those buttons but is a .org site.
You can read more about the differences right here:
