Finidng an API-Key?
-
I don’t want a wordpress.com blog (I have my own host), but I do need an API-key for akismet. Per this post it looks like I should be able to get an API without a blog. However, all instructions I find say to look on your wordpress.com dashboard to find the API key and all the nav links take me to the non-existent blog (username.wordpress.com).
Anybody know how I can find the API-key? Thanks!

Not sure if I understand this as I have a blog here and haven’t tried this method.
What do you see when you log in?
The API key is located at Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile -> Right under the header of “Your Profile and Personal Options”
Can you see any of that?

When I click Dashboard, it tries to load transportdocket.wordpress.com, but since I don’t have a blog at that subdomain it sends me to the Get another WordPress.com blog in seconds screen. I don’t need to register the blog, since I have one at a 3rd party host. From Matt’s posts, it seems like I can get an API-key without having a blog on wordpress.com, but I can’t seem to find it.
Thanks for the speedy reply!

It should work like that I would think. I’ve not yet tried this method (I do regular webhosting as well as help out here) so I’m not sure of the correct route on this.
Podz is posting to the forums currently so I’m hoping he’ll see this. I’ll send in a feedback asking for assistance as I’m sure this will come up again. Probably should be a FAQ on it as well since it really doesn’t spell it out in the FAQs.

transportdock – send me an email at support@ wordpress.com and I’ll send you your API key.
All other requests should do the same and I’ll add it to the top item on the FAQ.

Hi, I’m having this exact same problem. I host elsewhere but I signed up so I could have an Akismet API key because I’m getting a lot of comment spam. When I come to the WordPress site, I can log in and see the support/development blog posts that come up, and I can use the forums, but all the links where I should be able to access options on my account — My Dashboard, My Account, Add Post, the links that say my username — all take me to the same identical “This blog has not been activated yet” page at http://nothinghappens.wordpress.com . I’m unable to reach any place where I can find my API key or even change my password.
As for the API key being in the welcome email, I’m not sure that I got one… but if I did, I’ve since lost it in a cataclysmic e-mail disaster.

I have not received the “Welcome” email (although I did receive the activate mail). And even if it is the case that the key comes by email, everything at WordPress.com says it will be under “May Account”. Which for those of us who do not wish to activate a blog, it’s not.
(emailing support…)

I have had the same frustrating experience. I’ve created two accounts now in an attempt to acquire an API key for Akismet.
In neither case did I receive an API key in an email (no “Welcome” email, just activate and reset password when I requested it).
My “Dashboard” link for both accounts only takes me to the page encouraging me to start my blog (I’m on a host, so I don’t need a WordPress.com blog) or create new ones.
I will try an email to support.

There is no incentive or indication to read the welcome e-mail… you already have your password and can get “in” so when your e-mail client chimes a minute later, the tendency is to ignore it as the standard butt-kissing welcome e-mail you get when you sign up for something.
Clicking “My Account” should definitely give you for API key.

I am having a similiar problem.
I registered on wordpress.com without creating a blog. I went to “my account”, but there was no API key there, only the add a new blog message….so I did and got my API key.
But the API key I got from that still doesn’t work with my blog on a different host. What gives?

timetheif-you’re right and sorry for cluttering up the thread. I did email wp support, I just wasn’t sure if it was something OBVIOUS that I had missed.

It’s suppoose to be in the email that you receive with your information. Podz mentioned it in another thread awhile back.
I vote for sending in an email to support at this domain though and explaining what’s going on. :)

I needed an API key for Akismet to control spam on my WordPress blog that’s on a third-party host. I just emailed support@wordpress.com and followed podz’ instructions to register at wordpress.com for a key. I got my key where I was told I could find under My Account as well as from the welcome email sent to me from WordPress. I also used the blog I created to redirect people to where my current blog is actually located. See http://pim4gecks.wordpress.com/2006/06/16/redirect/.
