First block and "continue reading" duplicated on blog page

Hello, I am finding that when I add the read more block (I’m using block editor), then some of my posts are showing a duplication on the blog page. So for example, my first paragraph will appear under the title of my post and it will be followed by the “continue reading” tab, but then the first paragraph will display again and another continue reading tab.

It isn’t happening for every post, just some, which makes me think I’ve done something wrong?

I have tried deleting the “read more” block, updating and then re-adding and the issue still occurs.

The blog I need help with is storycomber.wordpress.com

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hm, this only appears to be affecting https://storycomber.wordpress.com/2021/02/01/storycombing-finding-treasures-within-childrens-books/ but I also don’t see any issues in the post itself.

Is there a change to the post in the block listing if you edit it and uncheck “Stick to the top of the blog” (besides it going back to its spot in chronological order, of course)?

    staff-blorbo,

The post “Shaping history with all my might,” published on March 11, 2021, also shows duplication of the excerpt and “Continue reading” link on the blog page. This duplication is present on archive pages as well, for example:

  • Hi @elstantino

From what I can see, the reason that the posts “Shaping history with all my might” and “Storycombing: Finding treasures within children’s books” behave the way they do is because you have nested the More Block within a Column Block instead of adding it as a top-level block.

From what I can see this is the only two posts where you have used this layout style:

As long as the More Block is at the top level (and not nested within another block) it will work as expected:

I’ve reported this behavior to the Gutenberg editor engineers to take a closer look. I’m fairly certain they did not intend for this block to be nested like that and for technical reasons it may not work there so it may not be something they can “fix” exactly.

With this in mind I recommend editing your two oldest posts to put the More Block at the top level (as you have with your newer posts) rather than wait to see if it can be addressed in the code for a future version of WordPress/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much for all of your help (and to everyone has responded). I really appreciate you taking the time to show me where I have gone wrong. It makes sense that the columns would create a duplication, but it hadn’t occurred to me. Unfortunately I’m not very tech savvy but I’m trying to learn!

It is fixed now. Many thanks,
    Eleanor
