First image in post as thumbnail
-
What do I have to do to get the first image in a multi-image post to be the thumbnail? As in for example the Top post widget and when sharing on Reddit. Many thanks in advance!

As in for example the Top post widget
I don’t know how this works when sharing posts with social media sites, but with the Top Posts and Pages widget, the image which displays is usually the most recent image uploaded. That’s the behavior I’ve seen for the past couple of years. The only exceptions I’ve noticed to that, until very recently, have been when images are evidently bypassed for being too small. Size limitations might be theme dependent. I really haven’t checked this behavior on various themes.
Lately, however, I’ve sometimes seen images in my Top Posts and Pages widget alternating, switching between multiple images — for example, when a page is refreshed, or a new page opened. I’ve been meaning to inquire in the forum about this observation.

You select it as the Featured Image, even if your theme does not require a Featured Image. Even then it sometimes pulls the wrong one.

We have no control over the images that Facebook or any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.
Re: Facebook
Maybe these will help or maybe not.

Note: Images in the WordPress.com Reader
Currently, when a post with the Standard, Aside, Link, Quote, or Status post format contains a video or audio embed or slideshow, that embed is pulled out and used in the Reader. Otherwise, it uses an image from the post.If the post has the Gallery or Image post format, a video or audio embed in that post would not be used in the Reader – one or more images would be used instead.
The way our RSS feeds work is that it pulls and displays the first image it finds inside the post content. When the Reader looks for an image, it goes for the featured image first and then an image inserted into the post — if there are no images that meet the size criteria, it will display the image as a thumbnail instead of a large image.

Thanks for your input!
I’ve always been able to solve the image pulling problem easily for all the social networks I use, except Reddit. Now I’ve found a way to work around it, it’s just a bit more time consuming.
